Default Lawrenceville?

Gwinnett County Schools would be your best bet, however avoid Lawrenceville. A popular area in Gwinnett County is Suwanee and Hamilton Mill, they hav terrific school districts. EAST Snellville is okay too, the Brookwood High School district is the highest rank in the county.

Cobb County has great school systems (and probably the best in affordable areas) -- Marietta, Vinings, etc.

Where you live all depends on where you are going to work. There are good areas all over the metro. Have you found a job yet, and if so, what part of the metro is it located in? What is your price range?

I don't recommend living more than 5 miles from where you work.

What about the Lawrenceville area? Is it a safe bet? We have researched some schools that perform rather well in Gwinnett County, but we are very curious about areas in Gwinnett County that we should avoid. We have 5 school-aged children so we need a good public school system in a safe neighborhood.
I would avoid Norcross, except for the Peachtree Corners area. My impression of Lawrenceville is that you have to take it one neighborhood at a time, but others here may disagree.

I dunno -- my commute is 8 miles, but it's a breeze because of the roads I take and the time at which I take them. We looked at homes within a 10-mile radius when we were home-shopping, and for much of the metro I think that distance is just fine.

Some roads are more clogged with traffic than others, though. After having to deal with Ashford-Dunwoody in the evenings for a week after I took a class up by the Perimeter Mall, I thank my lucky stars every time I have to drive on the E/W Connector in southern Cobb.

Yeah, I don't think there's much of a difference between 5 and 8 miles. I was talking more like 5 versus 25. My commute is actually 13 miles, though I could do 10 miles if I took I-20 instead of I-75, since I'm off the E/W connector. However, I also leave at 10am, so things have pretty much cleared up at that point and I like taking I-75 more. It also depends whether they have to commute across 400, or the downtown connector, or other high-traffic areas.
