Decatur???????
Hi Im thinking about moving to Decatur. From what I have read is there any good part of Decatur that I could consider moving too that is not bad??? Reason for moving there is because I will be working at the Veterans Hospital. Is Gwinnet nice to live? Is that close to the Veterans Hospital? Thanks

Decatur is not bad at all...where did you hear that? Near the VA hospital is actually very nice and quite expensive. Decatur covers a fairly large area, so you're apt to find good and bad. Most of it is nice, safe, and very liveable.
Gwinnett would be quite a commute to the VA hospital. If it were me, I would prefer to spend that 2 hours a day doing something besides sitting in traffic.

Downtown Decatur is a great area and is one of only a few truly walkable areas in Metro Atlanta. It has a mix of southern charm and a rather eccentric aesthetic that you may find in towns such as Boulder or Madison. The Oakhurst neighborhood in Decatur is also nice, as well as the adjacent Lake Claire neighborhood in the city of Atlanta.
...but whatever you do...DON'T GO TO GWINNETT!! There are plenty of nice areas in Gwinnett, but the commute is absolutely awful--even on the weekends!

I'm curious about the schools in Decatur. From what I've seen, they don't rank real high - but maybe I have bad info. Do a lot of people send their kids to private school? I want to have a good public school system where we move.

City of Decatur is a separate school system from Dekalb County. I've only ever heard great things about Decatur schools.

Decatur's nice--within city limits. East of 285 ... not so much. We're considering buying in Decatur just to be close to work.
Schools? Pretty consistent with the rest of metro Atlanta. A few gems, but mostly mediocre or poor performing.

Backfist is not exactly right -- the City of Decatur schools are mostly gems -- if you are looking inside the city limits.
Outside, in DeKalb County, there are lots of scary schools that have Decatur mailing addresses -- proceed with caution.
