Default Employment Health Insurance in GA

Do most employers in Atlanta cover the entire family's health insurance (employee, spouse, kids)? Or do most employers expect for the employee to pay for the total cost of health insurance?

I think it will depend on the size of the company and whether they are national/international or just a small local business. It will also depend on the industry or line of business. The trend in most companies is a shared cost model where the employee picks up a portion of the monthly premiums and pays a copayment at time of service.

If you are employed by a company, you still pay a percentage for your coverage. It is far less than if you are self employed and get coverage on your own. Think about it, if you have a group of people paying towards coverage in a company, you get a better rate. Try pricing health insurance as a private party, you will find that you are getting a break with an employer. I don't know about any company that pays the whole amount!
Health insurance is VERY expensive! If you get a company that pays all of it...you did great! Trust me when I tell you, my husband is self employed....health insurance is our biggest expense!

Rasmom, say it aint so. How much do you guys pay in health insurance a month? I'll be starting my own business when I get to GA so info would be great. My husband plans on working for a company so we thought of getting insured threw his employer. Right now the companies we work for we are covered 100%. My husband's current employer pays 50% of insurance for kids and spouse. My employer just covers me.

Clark Howard is the consumer guru for Atlanta. He advises on issues such as these. Many of us want him to run for Mayor. 'Just Ask Clark'.

They are self-employed so they are paying the entire premium. I'm in L.A. and I believe my 'family coverage' is somewhere in the neighborhood of $1150 per month. Health insurance is expensive!!!

Coverage in NJ for my wife, 2 kids and me would have been anywhere from $900/month for a plan with a $7,500 deductible and $35 copays, to over $1,700/month if I wanted to duplicate the United Healthcare plan that I had with no deductible and $10 copays. The rates vary dramatically by state, with GA being somewhat lower than NJ. If you dig around a bit, I don't think you'll find $1,000/month to be so "unheard of" in CA for a self-employed person looking for family coverage.

WRT employers covering your insurance costs, I wouldn't count on it- most companies are asking for greater participation by the employee, especially for family coverage. I work for a company that has over 21,000 employees, and we still have to contribute to our insurance- it's only $200/month for the family medical plan, but it's still something.

Also being self-employed, I pay $1200 a month for health insurance that also covers dental. It is "family" coverage - myself, spouse and 2 kids. I was complaining when it was $950 a month but now...
