So in a couple of weeks me and my wife will be back in Atlanta to look at some more homes for a possible move back to the metro. We've narrowed down our search to Duluth/Lilburn and Snellville. However we do like Smyrna a lot. My only complaint about Smyrna are the schools. Going by online sites Smyrna doesn't match up to the schools out in Gwinnett County.

Now I've come to not put a lot of stock into these school rating sites. A lot of their metrics are unfair and can be considered culturally biased. Since we don't live in Atlanta and due to covid there's no way we could visit any elementary school and get a feel of what we like.

So I'm wondering are there anybody on this forum that has any information on how the schools are in Smyrna? More specifically Teasley Elementary/ Nickajack/ and King Springs. Also a bit curious about Griffin middle school as well.

Thanks in advance!

My only bit of info is I knew a couple of people that went to Campbell High (I think that's where Griffin MS feeds to).
One went in the 2000s. probably early/mid 2000s as she was a little older than me. She stuck with the IB program because the "regular" school just was not doing it for her. Another went there around 5 years ago. He ended up leaving early and doing just dual enrollment to finish his high school career. Said Campbell was a little iffy and wasn't challenging enough for him. Felt like he wasn't really getting a good education. I personally don't know if Campbell and its schools are on the upswing or not. I hear a lot of good things about Smyrna and it seems poised to improve. Don't know if that's translated into the schools as well or not.

I live in Smyrna but don't have specific info on the schools. Teasley tends to get the highest marks followed closely by King Springs and then Nickajack. Just so you are aware they are building a new middle school next year. Not sure if that redistricting has occurred yet.

Schools continue to improve in the area but yes, it has been slower than we would like. We are the same school district as Walton and other highly regarded Cobb County schools. So I can't help to think it is more a factor of our average income level is less. So basically what makes Smyrna so desirable (location and cost) also hurts us when it comes to schools.

Teasley Elementary is a great school. Some of the others are ok.

The issue with smyrna is the middle and high schools are trash. The only acceptable routes are private school or to become immersed in the IB program.

For the record, my house is zoned to teasley and I have a young son. After teasley I doubt we stay in the area. Or we go private.

Thanks for that info. I really tried not putting a lot of stock into the data but you saying this pretty much confirmed what I already thought looking at the data.

Thanks to everybody else also!

The info I can give is only anecdotal:

-Smyrna is desirable due to both cost and location, and is only trending upward.
-Smyrna is in Cobb county, which overall has great schools. In theory, it has the same curriculum and county leadership as the best schools in Cobb County.
-I live in East Cobb (best schools), and can tell you that a sizeable portion of my neighbors moved here from Smyrna once they had kids.
