I'm 64 and after spending 1.5 years seraching for a job in Atlanta I am still jobless. Now I am totally broke. Does anyone know if I can break my lease to move out of state where I can live with a family member and look for a job?

You certainly can walk out, but the landlord can go after you. However if you ever have to appear in the court, judge will weigh your situation. Another thing you can do is to talk to the landlord and have it settled.

The landlord can certainly come after you. I'd probably just sit down and try to negotiate some type of deal. Presumably it wouldn't be in his best interest to sue a unemployed 64 year old. Maybe y'all could work something out. Good luck!

Ask the leasing agent what your options are.

If they won't work with you, even though it's probably against the leasing agreement, you could sublet the apartment to someone else and let them take it over until the lease is up. If you wanted to be extra stealth about it, they would pay you the rent and you'd continue to pay the leasing office directly until the lease expires.
