Question Sex Offender Maps in Cherokee County

In the state we live in the Sex Offender Reg. also includes a map in which you can see at a glance the actual location of any sex offenders. This is very helpful when looking for a home if you have children. I don't see anything like this for Georgia. Are there areas/streets to stay away from where known "trouble" is.

This web site might be useful for you. There are other resources as well -- just search Google for sex offenders map or something similar.

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for in a website. The last thing we want to do is move across the country and find we bought a home next to a child sex offender. I realize you still have to keep your eyes open, but at least your chances are a bit better.
Do realtors have to tell you if the home your looking at is next to a S.O. or only if you ask? I notice on S.O. maps that often you will see two living very close to each other. Is there any recourse a neighborhood can take when it is a high child populated area that is legal to protect your children.......and island and a big boat perhaps?

TakeAhike, Thank you for that article. Very interesting. It would be great if with all the lawyers out there, a group could be commissioned to comb through all aspects of this problem. And for the results to keep the safety of our children at the top of the list.

Also what are the laws for Sex Offenders who come in from other states. In our state they have to notify law inforcement if they cross the border. This is because we had men who gathered here and set up "vacations" to Mexico to "enjoy the company of young boys".
Does anyone know what state has the strongest Sex Offender laws?

There's no way to ensure that registered offenders are notifying the state when they move or when they cross state lines, so you can look at a map all you want and can't guarantee you'll be "safe". I'd also tend to be more concerned about the "offenders" who haven't been caught, convicted and registered (who no one is watching) than those who registered and posted on the internet.

In most cases, if you select a home in a decent community, your chances of having an issue with one of your neighbors are minimized. Personally, I think you're making a big deal out of nothing- to worry about the guy down the street is a waste of time, since there's nothing keeping people from hopping in the car and driving across town if they want to do some harm. And this is coming from someone who has two young daughters.

Thank you for your warm and fuzzy answer. This information regarding Sex Offenders is very important to some people. We have homes for sale where there are registered offenders on the same block and as nice as the homes and neighborhoods are, they can not sell their homes. Would you actually purchase a home when you know that your neighbor is a convicted child molester and you have young children. Please!

Also, I have read your responses on many threads. Are you a Realtor or a New Home Seller for planned communities. I notice when anyone mentions any concern with safety in any manner within your area, you shoot them down ASAP. These threads are a place for people from far away to gather information and help them make a better more informed choice. Most of the people who are writing have already made the choice to move to the Atlanta area, there must be something we all like about it to begin with or we wouldn't bother asking all these questions. But to gloss over everything defeats the point of this forum.

Thanks to all the people out there who can respond with some constructive information.

mayberrybound, your post strikes me as combining rudeness, ignorance and naivete. The "registered sex offender" category includes people who had consensual sex with other teens when they were teenagers themselves. Stupid and careless of them, certainly, but those kind of people are probably no more likely than anyone else to molest your children. People who have served their time are supposed to not be a danger to society. On the one hand, of course it makes sense to be prudent, but on the other hand, your concern seems unbalanced and hysterical. Bob is perfectly correct that your kids are probably more at risk from perverts who haven't been caught yet, than from ones who've served their time and are being watched by the authorities.

In the Georgia Association of Realtor's (GAR) Purchase and Sales Agreement form, item 10 (b) refers to Buyer's duty to inspection of the neighborhood and that includes sex offenders.

Not to belittle the topic, but as Realtors, we cannot be aware of all the conditions of a neighborhood. Like a previous poster stated, not all sex offenders are registered. The liability on Realtors is huge and you can see what the implications are to my industry. That is why the Georgia Association of Realtors included the language and the website printed and in bold on the form.

To be devil's advocate, what is an acceptable distance from a sex offender? Someone might say 5 miles and while others might say 15 miles.

I am not sure what the forms say for new construction for a non-GAR form as builders have a tendency to use their own forms drafted by their own attorney not the boiler plate that we use.

The website that a previous poster gave you is the same that is given in the GAR contract.

Hope that helps.
