Question To Atlanta from MN (have to be near airport )

We will be moving to atlanta from cold cold Minnesota in July/Aug 08.
The job requires frequent travelling so I need a place which is near airport / easily accessible to airport ( 30 minutes driving ok).
I need suggestions about rental accomodation.
Also please suggest desirable places where i could buy a house in 6 months.

Thanks

Where in MN are you moving from?

I moved down here from the Twin Cities back in the fall of 2004. I actually miss wintertime, though you'll see temps drop down into the teens here a few times a year in January. And the summer is long here. It isn't as bad as I was led to believe, though.

I think airport access from where I live is fine here in southern Cobb County (northwest of Atlanta, but not too far north), but others might disagree.

If you're gonna rent first (which I think is wise), you should have plenty of time to check out various areas. Some general tidbits:

* The Atlanta metro is maybe a third larger than the Twin Cities, which means there are lots of choices regarding location. It has also been expanding at a rate of 100,000 people a year, meaning there is lots of new housing.

* Housing is less expensive here than in the Twin Cities, so you can find more house for your $$$ if you do your homework.

* The airport is on the SW corner of the metro, but most of the suburbs that you'll see recommended in these forums are located across the northern half of the metro. I suspect it's because more people already live in the northern half compared to the southern half, so you'll see more people here who are posting from the northern burbs.

* There are some very good subdivisions and communities in the southern metro from what I've heard, but I don't know much about them since I'm up in the NW corner.

I think you'll find Atlanta to be an interesting place. The hills and trees make the area beautiful, I think. Crime is a little more prevalent here, though, so I would seriously consider an alarm system wherever you end up living. FWIW.

Welcome to Atlanta.

I was just curious, does your move have anything to do with the NWA and Delta merge? I was just wondering how that's going to impact the hubs of MSP and ATL. As for where to live, I would look into Midtown or Buckhead. At least that's where I'd live if I lived back in Atlanta.

Thanks for you replies : Answering your questions :
1. I am moving from Eden Prairie, MN. I do plan to rent for 6 months then buy - that should be sufficient time to understand the area.

2. My move is not related to NWA/Delta merger. This years 20 below temperatures helped make up our mind. Cannot take it anymore.

3. I am hoping to buy a house for 250K (secure place is important). I keep reading about crime in atlanta. So might go upto 300K if it buys me more security. community wise - good schools and access to airport are important

I keep hearing about midtown being better option for access to airport.
Please give me name of the places which comprise the midtown.

Thanks for welcoming notes :-)

Are you coming solo or with family (kids, specifically) in tow? This makes a difference!

The "Tuscany at Lindbergh" apartments I hear are pretty nice. You are within walking distance of the MARTA rail station there and can get directly into the airport via the station there in around the 30 minute or less mark as well. LINK.

There is an area behind the MARTA station there known as Peachtree Hills, but I doubt there will be much in the 300k range there, unless it's one of the rare condos in the hills - there are other condo complexes going up around the MARTA station there if that's the way you want to go.

I would look into Smyrna/Vinings as well. 20 minutes to airport and it's a very nice community with a village-like feel. Kind of a nice breath of fresh air from all the construction going on around midtown. We live there and love it.
