What your thoughts on how East Point is developing? Does it have the true pattern of unique-local reinvestment like EAV? Or is it going to be filled with big box stores and starbucks? I am not familiar with the area but am looking to buy. But I want a place with character so what do you guys think?

I live in Atlanta, and I love East Point. I would move there and buy a house there if it weren't for the fact that I work north of the perimeter (and I am not ready to buy right now). I love downtown East Point. I know people who own homes there and they love it. They have a very quaint square and great restaraunts/bars, and they are starting to get some shops.
Yes, there is crime, and there is crime everywhere else. If you want find an affodable home intown, East Point is worthy of consideration. |

There are those that know... those that think they know... and those that want to know.
East Point is a city (Like Decatur) that has distinct neighborhoods in it. Some of the City of Decatur's neighborhoods are Oakhurst, Great Lakes, and Winonna Park. Some of the City of East Point's neighborhoods are Jefferson Park, Conley Hills, and Frog Hollow. East Point has a very progressive government and along the Main St Corridor there are innovative restaurants, boutiques, and shops springing up. The neighborhoods closer to Main St. date from the 1920s-1950s and the crime in this vicinity is actually lower than the Metro Atlanta average (At least it was 2 years ago). The City of East Point extends OTP around Camp Creek area and more of a commercial big box thing is going on there. I personally know people that have moved from Decatur and Atlanta to East Point because they like the vibe in the neighborhoods along the Main St. corridor. I live in Atlanta, but if I moved I would definitely consider East Point. I don't know why I feel I have to defend East Point, but it gets a bad rep it doesn't deserve from people who "think they know". Some misconceptions are due to the fact that some areas in unincorporated South Fulton call them selves East Point same as some areas in unincorporated Dekalb identify themselves as Decatur. Check out this site eastpointliving.com for more info about East Point and its eclectic neighborhoods. What I wrote could be applied almost verbatim to College Park too. I prefer Historic College Park's housing stock (hcpna.org), but prefer East Point's vibe and its a little closer to Downtown. |

Love East Point~ The homes have not morphed into McMansion-land, and neighborhoods are tight-knit socially (for the most part). Over the past month, I've experienced an increase in home buyers interested in the area...I'm taking a buyer to East Point today! Central location, active community. I would agree with the earlier posting regarding schools though.

I live in East Point and have for over three years. We love it here. And I hate to say it to the guy who said he didn't notice the huge gay/lesbian population, but all you have to do is look for the flags - there's several of them in our small neighborhood alone! We have a small home, but it was a great first time home because it's functional, cute, affordable, and it was built in the 1920s so it has some charm. We have a neighborhood park within walking distance, which is great since I have a toddler - and while I'm on the subject, I feel perfectly safe walking around alone in my neighborhood. (Some people think that if they exit the freeway between downtown and the airport they're taking their lives in their hands. It's simply NOT TRUE.) We have great neighbors and have made several friends while out on walks, etc. I can walk to downtown East Point - it's about a mile from my house, although I must admit we tend to drive down to the Brake Pad in College Park when we want to eat locally...mmmm and the best patio around! The crime rate has actually gone down lately in our neighborhood as well, and the police spoke about it at our last neighborhood association meeting. I would highly recommend East Point and I'm so glad that we made it our first home. If you're looking to rent and try the area on for size, there's a couple of great homes on my block...let me know and I can get you in touch

I work in East Point and think the place has a lot of charm. Good places to eat.. Thumbs Up (my favorite breakfast place), the Tavern .. kind of a dive, but one of my faves.. Oz Pizza .. EXCELLENT pizza joint. The houses are quaint and cute and it has its own MARTA station. That said, I would think long and hard before moving there. The crime there is horrendous. It just is. You hear about it all the time. You see it. My boss's brother was a gay urban pioneer into the area.. he got mugged .. beaten badly .. he left. Someone else I work with, a black person, (and yes, the area is predominately black if you were wondering or care) told me to NOT live there. She tried it a few years ago and her house was broken into numerous times. She told me it was a hellish experience. The area definitely seems to be gentifrying. Someone must be frequenting the trendy and cool businesses, but it's not there yet. If you're the kind of person who has a very high tolerance for crime, East Point can be a good long term investment for you. You can get a house for a song there (and ask yourself, why is that? why can you get a house for a song in such a centrally located area with MARTA access?) but understand what you're buying into. I would definitely not suggest buying in East Point before taking a hard, hard look at the place in person.
