Why are so many houses for sale in Indian Hills? What is the community like? Do you have to join the full blown Country Club to get the Swim & Tennis or are they separate?
Thanks for the help so far.

It, Indian Hills Country Club, was established in the 70’s with many cedar homes; however, there are newer homes too.

I think it is a pretty massive development, so % wise it probably has the same amount of homes for sales, but it's just that it's so huge it appears as though there are a lot. We have friends that live in there and they really like it. It's kind of weird b/c you have such a mis-mash of homes in there - similar to other areas of town you will have a humongous infill house sitting next to a cedar ranch home.

The elementary school in this area is Teasley and the parents absolutely love it. I don't think Campbell middle is the most popular so many kids switch to Lovett or Westminister (closest private schools) in 5th grade. That may not be an option for you, but this seems to be what most of the kids do in this neighborhood.

But then the high school for the area, Campbell High School, has a pretty good reputation, correct?
(International Baccalaureate, Strong Extracurriculars/Athletics, etc.)

As far as the "Country Club" neighborhoods go, thats not really what I'm looking for. I do golf (pretty badly), but the whole golf carting thing is more of a transportation thing for the family within our neighborhood. My wife takes the kids to the pool in it, visits neighbors in for socializing, etc... The ideal situation for us would be a large but close knit subdivision w/ safe streets where the kids can play. The neighborhood pool is a big deal for us. Is swim team a popular activity in Atlanta?
Thanks again for the help and keep the info coming! I'm going to dig around and check out some of the suggestions above.

Well, then if you are not really looking for country club neighborhoods, than you have a plethora of choices (swim/tennis, strong community) in East Cobb for your price range. Too many choices really...so many great neighborhoods in East Cobb.
It might suggest that you narrow down which schools or areas in East Cobb you are interested in (or if being close to your work is very important).

The job opportunity that I'm considering is in the Cumberland Mall area, so I guess the southern part of East Cobb is closest. From what I've read it sounds like the Walton HS district is one of the tops in the area. My 9 y/o is currently attending a public all gifted program in SC, unfortunately I'm not finding that kind of option in the Atlanta area.
The Vinings area would be great from a commute standpoint, but I'm really not interested in private schools.
I really appreciate all the suggestions and help!

You might like River Forest in East Cobb. I'm not sure about the schools in the Vinings area or Smyrna. I had several friends (when I attend private school) that were from the Smyrna area. The tennis thing is huge in Atlanta. We currently live in an area where tennis is not that big of a deal and we pay an arm and a leg to get my daughter private lessons because there are no teams or leagues where we are for her to join (unlike Atlanta)! There are several awesome swim/tennis neighborhoods in East Cobb. I am not sure of the price of homes in these neighborhoods, as it has been several years since I lived there, but you are sure to find something in your price range that is just what you are looking for. There is an older neighborhood by Mount Bethel Elem. School called Princeton Lakes that use to be very popular and filled with kids! I'm not sure if it's a swim and tennis but I know that when we lived in the area a ton of my friends lived there.
Good luck!

Based on all of your criteria and requirements (great schools, great neighborhood, swim/tennis, good commute, price range), here are my neighborhood recommendations for you:
East Cobb
1. Princeton Mill (off of Robinson Road)
2. Belmont (off of Paper Mill Road)
3. Sibley Forest (off of Paper Mill Road)
4. Gant Quarters/Millbrook Farm (off of Terrell Mill, Old Canton, and Lower Roswell Roads)
5. Sentinel Lake (off of Lower Roswell Road)
6. Somerset (off of Lower Roswell/Terrell Mill and Shadowlawn Roads)
7. Weatherstone (off of Holt Road)
8. Woodmont (off of Barnes Mill Road)
9. Fox Hills (off of Shadowlawn Road)
9. Indian Hills Country Club
Smyrna/Vinings/Mableton Area
1. Vinings Estates
2. Stoneybrooke
3. Various Neighborhoods/Subvisions in the King Springs Elementary District
I hope this helps. Good Luck!

As a resident of Vinings Estates, I would not recommend this area (Vinings Estates or Stoneybrooke). While the neighborhood is nice and extremely child friendly, the traffic on Cooper Lake in the morning is horrible. It can easily take 20 minutes just to reach the East-West Connector. Since that is only about a 1 mile from the front entrance of both of the neighborhoods you mention above, I am sure you can imagine what that does to your morning commute time (regardless of where you are heading). Just as reference point, the 20 to 25 minute "commute time" to the E-W Connector is leaving our house at 8 AM.
