East Cobb Suggestions - Swim & Tennis
I am considering a relocation to Atlanta for a business opportunity. I lived in the Vinings area briefly back in the mid 90's so I'm a little familiar with the area. Given that my children are 9 & 5, schools are my priority. My wife & I are both from the Greenville SC area and currently live there in a large, well established neighborhood. The things we love about our current neighborhood are the community activities and socializing (block parties etc...), we also have a very active swim team that my 9 y/o really enjoys. Also, alot of the residents here drive golf carts are there any golf cart friendly areas in East Cobb (Peachtree City is too far south for work)? We would love to find the same type area in Atlanta. It doesn't really matter to me if the neighborhood is new or not, in fact I would probably prefer an established neighborhood. My price range is probably in the $350 - $500K range.
The job I'm considereing is in the Cumberland Mall area.
Suggestions and advise will be welcomed!

I will again tout my neighborhood: Paces Ferry Park. It is a parent's DREAM. I cannot stress how thankful I am to have automatic after-school activities every day. We're 1 minute from Cumberland Mall/Vinings in the Teasley district...great swim and tennis, playground, neighborhood assoc., halloween parties, the whole shabang...close to the airport, not far from highway so there's no back road traffic. I swear, when we were looking in this area it was like someone cued the kids to come out the minute we drove in! LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. There are currently 4-5 homes for sale...all in the 4-500K range, all relatively new. I think you can do a neighborhood search using the Harry NOrman or Jenny Pruitt websites. You should check it out. I can't recommend it enough! Only thing is...it's not in East Cobb but would be very close to your job!

Wow. Our temporary stopping point before finding a "real" house was a little old rental rambler on E Lee Rd SE, a little stub road off Atlanta road which is down in the ravine between the houses on Tynmoore Court and Tyne Terrace.
Yes, that whole area is very nice. And almost on top of the freeway, with convenient access to both Paces Ferry and Cumberland Parkway (via the Orchard Road bridge).

East Cobb has many established neighborhoods with swim/tennis in your price range. However, since the awful Atlanta traffic makes proximity to job a big quality of life issue, it seems to me that you'd want to check out the sweettea1's neighborhood first.

It's not a golf community, but I grew up in Fields Pond in East Cobb. Great schools, great swim and tennis neighborhood with pool parties. Had a great time growing up there and really enjoyed having some of my best friends right down the road from me. I'm not sure what the neighborhood is like now (as far as kids go) but always worth a quick drive through.
Good luck!

If "golf carting" is important to you then:
Indian Hills Country Club (East Cobb)
*East Valley, East Cobb, Wheeler
-or-
*East Side, Dickerson, Walton
Atlanta Country Club (East Cobb)
-there may be a few homes under $500,000
*Sope Creek, Dickerson, Walton
Pinetree Country Club (in Kennesaw, just north of Town Center, next to KSU)
*Kennesaw Primary, Big Shanty Intermediate, Palmer, North Cobb
+I (we) can give you many other recommendations if you are interested in non-country club communities.

Thanks for all the suggestions! They bring up a few questions:
For an area like smyrna / Vinings (Paces Ferry ParK), what are the schools like? I would rather commute an extra 30 minutes if that meant my kids went to the best schools. I really enjoyed the Vinings area when I lived there in 96, but I know its grown / changed alot since then.
As far as the "Country Club" neighborhoods go, thats not really what I'm looking for. I do golf (pretty badly), but the whole golf carting thing is more of a transportation thing for the family within our neighborhood. My wife takes the kids to the pool in it, visits neighbors in for socializing, etc... The ideal situation for us would be a large but close knit subdivision w/ safe streets where the kids can play. The neighborhood pool is a big deal for us. Is swim team a popular activity in Atlanta?
Thanks again for the help and keep the info coming! I'm going to dig around and check out some of the suggestions above.

Indian Hills comes to mind. Another nice community load with amenities is East Hampton built by John Wieland Homes in the 90‘s; this community would be at the top of your price range. I am pretty certain that you can negotiate a price to be suitable.
