Family Doctor in the Dunwoody/Doraville Area?
We'll need a doctor for our entire family. We're basically healthy people, but like doctors who aren't big pill-pushers. We got referrals from our doctor back home, but unfortunately they're all much too far away. Anybody local, relatively young and sees little kids too? I'm willing to get a separate pediatrician for the little guy, but I really like the coziness of us all seeing the same doctor.

If you decide to go the pediatrician route, I cannot recommend Dunwoody Pediatrics enough. Good luck finding a good family doctor, and sorry that I do not have any recommendations for you.

In all my years, I haven't heard of any of my friends using a family physcian here. I take that back -- many years ago, I had one friend who did for a while, but that doctor retired. Around here, most people don't even use the same dentist as their kids -- we just switched my teenager to our dentist from the pediatric one-- and we are the first of our friends to do so.
One of the challenges is that because we have excellent children's hospitals, Egleston, Scottish Rite and the one at Grady, our "grown up hospitals" especially close in, aren't really set up to serve children. Given that your in Dunwoody, you would want your child at Scottish Rite, God forbid, if he needed hospitalization. Most General Practioiners probably don't have privileges there.
Dunwoody Pediatrics is a good recommendation for the little guy. They are so close -- over in Dunwoody Village .I also like Northside Pediatrics, Sandy Springs Pediatrics, and there are more if none of these work for you.
For adults, we now use an internal medicine group that has offices all over-- but they are hard to get into even when you are sick.
My husband and I use to use Family Practice Association of Atlanta-- they are in the Georgetown area of Dunwoody and were very nice. I think their number is 770) 454-0091. You could ask if they see children, but I don't recall ever seeing any there.

Oh, okay. That makes sense. I'll check with Dunwoody Pediatrics for the little guy and we do like a pediatric dentist that a friend lined us up with. I saw the Family Practice Association when I was googling. It's good to know they're okay.

LMM, this is interesting, because on another thread I advised mxd.Brit, a recent arrival from the UK who was asking about getting some vaccinations for her kids, that here in the US (East Cobb being my only experience of US living) that people take their kids to pediatricians, not family doctors as in the UK, Canada, etc. plessthanpointohfive rejoined that my advice was incorrect - according to pless, plenty of folk, including herself, use a family doctor for the entire family. I was surprised that I'd been so misled, so now I'm surprised again. Your account matches my limited experience. My colleagues at the office in Sandy Springs, and neighbors in East Cobb, gave me the impression that it would outlandish to use other than a pediatrician for a child's primary care. We have a pediatric dentist too.

Perhaps Pless knows of family doctors, I don't and would venture that I know NOONE (in real life) that uses one. I do know of other places in the US where this is more common but not here. Our pediatrician will actually see kids until they are 22, though I suspect that few "kids" that age go, unless they need a quick physical.

I hear very good things about Dunwoody Pediatrics. We use Preston Ridge Pediatrics, but they're in Alpharetta (Old Milton Parkway): a bit of a hike, but a great practice.
One of my neighbors uses Dunwoody Pediatrics, and they made an amazing catch. At his one-year checkup, they found some unusual lumps on the little boy and immediately sent him to Children's Scottish Rite, where he was diagnosed (that same day) with neuroblastoma (a serious cancer of the nervous system). That led to an 18-month odyssey of treatment including chemo, radiation, and 2 bone marrow transplants. He's doing fine now (although there is about a 75% chance of relapse with that type of cancer). I know that my neighbor is very grateful to them for catching it and referring them on quickly. So, I think that that says good things about the doctors in the practice.
