We live in a 2,800 square foot single family home, and our average electric and gas bills run about $300 per month (total for the two combined). The electric and gas bills spike at different times, but for the most part we run just under $300 for the month.

In the summer months, I think that our A/C bill is around $225 and the other is around $75. As I mentioned above, we pretty much stay between $250 and $300 per month for those two combined.

Our house is around 2,000 square feet and our electric bills (from Cobb EMC) alone get up into the $400s in the summer time. Our bill for last August hit a record of over $500.

I'd say factors affecting this are a 1980s house that's not particularly energy efficient (e.g. it has single-pane windows) and a home-based worker, so we don't get to turn down the A/C during the day "while everyone is at the office/school". Also we moved here from a cold climate and it's taken us years to begin to acclimatize. I believe Cobb EMC's rates are high, too. We don't have a choice of electrical provider and I haven't looked into rate lock-in options.

We really can't afford what we were spending on A/C last summer, so this year, at least so far, we've been trying to be more sparing with it, by turning it off and opening all the windows at night. We set the thermostat at 74, which is probably lower than many. Will probably consider raising that to 76 as well....

That plays a huge part in the cost. Our house is brand new and around 2,400 SF, and even with the AC down at 72 (or lower at times) and on all day, our electric bills in the summer didn't break $200 last year. If you intend to stay in the house for some time, I'd definitely look into doing something about the windows- especially on the south side where they get the major heat gain.

We're on a fixed pricing plan for GNG nat gas ($105/month), and our bills from the local electric coop (Greystone Power) are usually between $140 and $180. This is a 2600 sq ft house built in 1987, but we do have a lot of shade trees which I suspect help keep our cooling costs down. We tend to keep the temps between 70-74 in the summertime and around 70 in the winter, but we also let the temp drop into the low 60's at night in the wintertime for sleeping.

I'm in Sharpsburg and keep my a/c set at 75 and 69 at night. In a brand new home, 3000 sq ft, I am averaging $300 a year. Less in the summer and slightly more in the winter (gas fireplaces were used a lot!).
