Default What To Do In Decatur?

My friend is visiting from Sweden and she wants to tour Decatur tomorrow. I plan to take her to see the Farmer's Market and perhaps have lunch at the Watershed Restaurant.

Is there anything else to do in Decatur?

Your suggestions are most appreciated as I don't have any additional, fun ideas.

A few weeks ago someone started a thread about 'Nothing to Do In Decatur'--it grew longer each day.

Have you been to Decatur?

There are a number of interesting shops to browse and many historic sites to view.

City of Decatur, GA

Decatur Buildings, Homes and Places on the National Historic Register

Maybe 'Lovin Decatur' will see this thread she can tell you exactly where to go.

As long as you are so close--drive through Druid Hills/Emory/Va Highland. Callanwolde Art Center on Ponce de Leon is definitely worth a glance.

At Emory --Lullwater Park/President's home, IIRC good for a browse.

Fernbank History Center is something to see. About 5 minutes from Decatur.

There are book stores to browse. Strangely enough I cannot tell you exactly what I do when I go to Decatur--it is interesting to me. 'Just Looking Around'.

cmtiger might have some thoughts.

good luck

Eat at The Majestic on Ponce! Great ambiance. Then go to Fernbank-right down the road.

If she's a book lover, take her to all the bookstores around Decatur - there are a ton of really cool indie bookstores. Also, Fernbank Natural History Museum is pretty cool. It's not technically in Decatur, but it's within a mile or two. They have some pretty cool I-Max movies going on right now.

The boutiques near the square are also a good time if she like shopping. Or you could go for some spa services at Natural Body.

Oakhurst Community Garden is a nice visit if she is the crunchy, granola, organic type.

All good suggestions posted already here...

The Carlos Museum at Emory U is worth a look, too.
The Anne Frank exhibit is still at the old courthouse.
There's a new place that's great for oenophiles on West Ponce called Tastings, where you can try flights of different wines...woo-hoo!
Also, everyone is raving about The Chocolate Bar...chocolate and cocktails in a one-stop shopping experience! Gotta love it!
My daughter will tell you that Decatur's boutiques are the best in Atlanta, and I have the credit card balance to prove it

The Majestic is definitely an Atlanta landmark. However, I would alter the above statement to "Go take a picture of the Majestic and then for the sake of your innards find somewhere else to eat before going to Fernbank".

If you decide to go eat at the Majestic, your top priority at your next destination (if you make it there in time) should be locating the restrooms.

All good choices. But the OP should also definitely follow through on the original two ideas too--going to the Farmer's Market and Watershed--these are two of my favorite things in Decatur.

Have you tried Cakes and Ale (corner of W Ponce and Ponce deLeon Pl)? Opened by a former chef at Watershed, it already has a following.

Well, the OP will need a week in Decatur, jmo.

I don't really understand why people don't think there is 'Anything to Do in Decatur'.

I've lived here for decades and there is always 'plenty' to do in Decatur and the surrounding area.

I know/am positive that Decatur has its own Tourism/Convention Bureau--DeKalb County has one around Northlake but I would be surprised to learn that Decatur doesn't have its own.

LOL--I really think 'Lovin Decatur' should look into this and become the President if they actually do not have such a bureau/agency.

Just walking around the Agnes Scott Campus would take a full afternoon.

The DeKalb History Center another several hours. The cemetery(ies) and a place I have never been --something something house/Junior League or somebody coordinates programs there and they rent it out for weddings. I think it is located just past the shopping/dining district on the way to Fernbank and Ponce de Leon.

****It's time for 'Lovin Decatur' to start a permanent thread on Decatur--include everything there is to see and do there.

Then Pless can make a permanent post about Candler Park and the VA Highland, Inman Park, Midtown people can make similar threads. The Atlanta forum should be getting paid by 'Someone' for all the work we do for the tourism industry.

Maybe our Moderator can talk to 'The Admin'--cut the checks.
