Single mother and student moving from Indianapolis to Atlanta in July 2009. Any good advice?
I am a single mother of a six year old and I will be moving to the Atlanta area to attend Clark Atlanta. I attended there a long time ago and I want to go back. The city has changed drastically and I now have a child so I need some incite on what to expect. I have an idea where I want to live and I have friends down there and a couple of distant relatives but primarily will be on my own. I have researched this move for the past 4 months and will continue to do so before I make the leap. Are there other mothers moving to the area next summer?

I am moving to Atlanta in the spring of 2009 and I am a single mother of 3 kids and also in school mother. I am looking toward Smyrna and Marietta, Marietta seems to have great schools (schooldigger.com) is a great help to me right now because that is one of my biggest concerns. I love Smyrna and a little familiar with the area. I will be an hour and a half away from home…not too bad. I have distance family all over Atlanta and my son father lives in Smyrna. If you have anything that you think would help to me send it and I will do the same.

I am a single mother of a 7 year old and I use to attend Clark Atlanta, but I would not want to go back..lol..I think Douglasville, Lithia Springs, or Marietta could work.

Hello Kasha...I am a fellow Circle City resident myself & I am also planning to move to the Atlanta area. I am a single parent of two, ages 16 and 9, and I have been doing some research as to where I would like to live as well. I plan to move during the summer of 2010 because I'd like to have a job before I make my move and also, I would like to save up enough money for moving expenses and such. We should definitely keep in touch and maybe when you finally get settled in the Atlanta area, I can receive some information from you on the nicer areas of the city to raise my children. Good luck on your move!

I can't believe it's been almost a year since I posted and I'm STILL planning. I will start school there fall 2010 so I have plenty of time to find a place. Have any of you ladies made your move yet? Give some details please. I can't wait!

Unfortunately I have not made the move yet; I hear that the job market is not all that great down there (actually it's not great ANYWHERE these days) but it would be nice to have a secure job before moving down there. I've been reading a lot of posts from Atlanta natives and I seem to think that the northern portions of the city are the best areas. The only problem I'm having is that my favorite aunt doesn't want me to move but I'm just not happy in Indy anymore; there's nothing special about this city. I sent my resume to a couple of companies in Atlanta but I have yet to hear from them. Like I said, hopefully I'll be in Atlanta by next summer and I hope you will too!

I want to get a job before I go as well even though I only plan on working part time because of school. I told my family that me being there gives them some place to visit and that I will come home often. I have to get out of here.

I was wondering: do you think it would be an easier move if someone wanted to go to school there? I was thinking about obtaining a higher degree & was looking at Clark Atlanta. I wonder if I could receive a student loan and/or grant & use some of the money to relocate...not sure how that works.
