Default I'm Relocating to ATL, Please Help!

I will be relocating to ATL from NYC in late August to begin my career with the CDC. I'm desperately trying to find out about nice/diverse neighborhoods. I've spent some time researching about the general area, but I still find it difficult to make a concrete housing decision. I intend to rent for the first year, until I get to know the general area well enough to decide which locality suits my needs...

Presently I'm considering Iman and Candler Park, since these areas are closest to the CDC. Can anyone recommend a good 1 bedroom apartment rental unit? I do not wish to spend more than 1200 per month.

Also, are there middle class blacks in Candler and Iman park? If not, can anyone recommend a nice diverse/ middle class area of ATL, with relatively low crime that's not too far from the CDC? FYI: I'm a black American female (early 30's/single/0 children).

Thanks in Advance for your assistance!

There is another CDC'er that lives in Candler Park. I am sure that Pless will chime in soon.

In terms of Inman Park or Candler Park - both are great choices. I live in Inman Park so I will do my sales pitch for the neighborhood.

It is the oldest neighborhood in Atlanta and was founded in 1890. It is only 2 miles east of downtown Atlanta so residents use to take a horse drawn trolley to work. The Trolley Barn is still there but is now being used for special events as a rental. There is some beautiful architecture in Inman Park and is a great intown neighborhood. It is very diverse and you can walk to restaurants, entertainment, parks, a subway stop and shopping.

Here are some websites that might be helpful to you:

The website for the neighborhood: Inman Park

Inman Park Village: Inman Park Village It was a former Mead paper warehouse. When I first moved to the neighborhood I never knew what a large space it occupied. Now it is mixed use - apartments, lofts, single family homes, condos and brownstones.

There are restaurants galore. Here is a list that I comprised on a previous post:

Fritti & Sotto Sotto (which are side by side) U Restaurants

Parish: Concentrics Restaurants

Zaya: ZAYARESTAURANT.COM

North Highland Pub: Welcome to Cuisine Management

Wisteria: www.wisteria-atlanta.com

Loco Lino: www.localino.info

Of course, the holy trinity of Rathbun's, Rathbun's Steaks and The Krog Bar: Rathbun's by Chef Kevin Rathbun of Rathbun's & Krog Bar - Restaurants in Atlanta - restaurantsinatlanta.com

Shaun's: www.shaunsrestaurant.com

Inman Perk Coffee: www.inmanperkcoffee.com

The Albert: www.thealbertatlanta.com

Son's Place: Son's Place / Atlanta Restaurants

I know this is not Inman Park - but I have to let you know about Fox Brothers BBQ: www.foxbrosbbq.com

The neighborhood is very walkable. I walk my dog to the dog groomers and vet (which he doesn't like so much). It is a intown neighborhood so caution is always required. Most of the crime seems to be car break ins. Hello? If you live in any big city, don't park it on the street with an Ipod and a GPS device in plain view.

Here are some apartment complexes in Inman Park. I have never been in any of them as I don't do apartment rentals.

Blue Horse Apartments. This is the actual warehouse of the Mead paper warehouse. I don't know if you are old enough to remember but when I was in elementary school, we used Mead paper tablets and it had a blue horse on the cover: Parkside Partners - The Blue Horse at Inman Park Village

North Highland Steel Apartments: There was also a steel mill in Inman Park when I first moved here! Now there is a large apartment complex. Perennial Properties – Atlanta Apartments: N. Highland Steel Lofts

Either neighborhoods would be a fine choice. Of course my vote is for Inman Park

Grant Park sounds perfect for you. Very diverse neighborhood and I'm sure you could find something within your price range very easily.

You are very welcome. You should explore the neighborhood by foot to get a "feel" of the area. I would suggest taking MARTA to the Inman Park Station and walk down Edgewood. You will walk by Shaun's, Son's Place and the Trolley Barn. At the corner of Delta and Edgewood you will see a black looking phone booth. It was actually a holding cell for prisoners during Victorian times as they were awaited to be picked up by a horse drawn paddy wagon. You will also pass by the King Keith House, one of the neighborhood's lovely B&B's: King Keith House Atlanta Georgia Bed And Breakfast Historic Romantic Victorian B&B Inn Hotel Motel Lodging

You could then walk along Euclid which is parallel to Edgewood (look for a church that is for sale across a little park at the intersections of Euclid, Druid Circle and Edgewood). Make a left on Elizabeth from Edgewood and when take it until it dead ends on to North Highland. Inman Park Village will be on your left. That way you can explore the newest areas of Inman Park.

To get back to MARTA, take Elizabeth back "up" and turn left on Edgewood and the MARTA station will be at the end of Edgewood.

Have fun exploring!

Hello. How are these areas for multi-generational families? I am relocating in August with a young school age child and a senior citizen parent. Need access to Midtown/Downtown areas via public transportation. I prefer to rent and save $ until I get a better idea of the various neighborhoods. Prefer a rental house versus an apartment. Any suggestions anyone?

You might want to start a new thread.

Also - you could look for homes and apartments that are along the MARTA routes since you want public transportation. MARTA - Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority

Also, it all depends on what your rental budget would be.

Good luck
