No sir. There are only 100 bands on the first page, in which ten are from outside the US.

^^^^ I went back through a bit more carefully because the Canadian bands are listed in the same manner as the American bands which is misleading- its still less than 40. But whatever my point still stands one band from Jamaica or Tokyo, Japan doesn't give a city name recognition in a foreign country. That is a faulty premise. I would be much better prepared to give you international name recognition based on perhaps a significant foreign population or something that is instantly recognisable outside the US.

People in the US know about Austin to be sure but outside of the US Texas means Houston or Dallas and not much more.

See the Canadian ones are the problem- why don't they say Canada instead of listing the province like the state? Very irritating, esp since as a non-American I don't know all the state abbreviations.

By your logic, the USA ones should say Atlanta, USA instead of Atlanta, GA. Uh, no.

This is light years off topic now. My point is proven...thousands of people from outside of the USA visit Austin each year as a result of this ONE annual event. Clearly, Austin has significant "name recognition" planet-wide.

Who cares about some music festival and how many acts are from wherever? This was about Atlanta vs. Houston, not SXSW vs. Art Car Parade.

Millions visit Houston for one event, though, The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It is basically a state fair and more than just a rodeo nowadays. It hosts first run music acts in the 75,000 seat Reliant Stadium.

Just look at the 2008 Lineup alone, which was a weak year:

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And this is just one. But, how was Austin brought in anyway? It doesn't compete with the likes of Houston, Dallas, or Atlanta.

I addressed this earlier. I said a band visiting Austin doesn't give it name recognition outside the US.

And since the other non-American bands were listed by country then it would make sense that the Canadian bands would be listed by country not province. What is so dificult to understand about that?

In any case this is about Atlanta vs Houston and international recognition. Austin was just a red herring thrown out and really on the international scene it is not comparable to either of the two cities in question.

Please get back on subject before a moderator shuts this board down over this idiotic argument about some festivals in Texas. This was about Atlanta vs. Houston. Stay on the subject!

But seriously how are mostly Americans arguing about Atlanta vs Houston and international recognition, perhaps this should be posted in the World section for more accurate answers. Because somehow in this thread being foreign and having actually lived for 25 years outside the US gives me no credibility about the international recognition outside the United States.

Some of these things that ya'll are referencing really have no bearing once you leave America so they aren't a basis for international recognition. And yes everyone knows Coke for example but how many know it originated or whatever in Atlanta?
