I need help, working in Dunwoody but want to live in Duluth.
Hello,
At first I wanted to live in Lawrenceville/Duluth while I worked in Dunwoody. However, after reading different threads about different places and of course the traffic. I have to say I'm confused, If I work in Dunwoody? Where should I reside to beat as much traffice as possible but I don't want to move somewhere full of crime, hate and of course high rent. I have came across several properties in Lawrenceville/Duluth with reasonable rent and nice living.
Any and all Suggestions are fine, if you know a good Apartment community like me know as well.

Barbie--
Take a look at 'Chamblee/Dunwoody' area/my FYI has been about that area/off Peachtree Industrial, Peachtree Rd, since it sounds like you are going to be working somewhere around Perimeter Mall.
Brookhaven might be an option--older subdivision--many young professionals --off Peachtree/Chamblee area. It could be expensive--everything is now--but you know.
We've pretty much identified the Less Desirable Areas and where the worst traffic problems are. There are extended stay motel/hotels in Atlanta---maybe that would be an option? A good many on Holcomb Bridge Rd.
Take Care.

Duluth to Dunwoody is about 30 minutes. My wife drives to Dunwoody everyday. It is not too bad. As long as you don't drive on I-85 south and stay on Peachtree Industrial in the morning, you should be ok. Also, you can skip I-285 as well and use back road like Mount Vernon.
Of course, you can always find an apartment like Post Dunwoody in Dunwoody. That way, you don't have any traffic at all.

I'm sure it can be done--since 1,000's do it daily but if you don't 'Know' the area you almost have to rely on the interstates. Maybe someone within her company can offer relocation advice--or a local chamber of commerce? It seems like there should be relocation assistance available to newcomers???
I have to say that even though I have lived here for decades I don't know the back roads well enough to figure out that route for myself.
It sounded like Barbie found some apartments off Pleasant Hill, more toward Lilburn---east, I suppose. I have gotten thoroughly lost every time I have tried to go from that area back to Dunwoody/Perimeter. There's the Sugar Loaf Pkwy--spent a couple of hours driving around and around on that--then there's Satellite Blvd ---I was in tears --saw parts of Gwinnett that I had never seen before. Turned the wrong way...
Holcomb Bridge Rd might be a place to look---to my way of thinking it is now a central rd connecting Jimmy Carter/and parts east to the booming North.
Sometimes I just take a map and start driving that is almost the only way to find your way around. Not fun. (

ETA--map of pleasant hill/gwinnett mall area
It is like driving through a labyrinth. I really hate this area.

You can take a chance living in Gwinnett County and working in Dunwoody. It is a 30 minute drive, yeah, but that's with no traffic. Coming down 85 in the morning from Lawrenceville/Duluth area is so unpredictable. It's congested anyway, and if there's an accident, forget it; it also depends on what your work hours will be. I would suggest that you live closer to Dunwoody if possible, although living in Gwinnett won't be total murder, people do have that commute.
I don't know what kind of money you have, but living in Dunwoody itself may be quite pricey, it is one of the exclusive areas of Atlanta. I live in the Vinings area of Smryna, and it takes me 20 minutes to get to Dunwoody in good traffic; so Smyrna might be a consideration, also Sandy Springs, or actually living in town Atlanta and having a reverse commute is an idea. You don't have to worry about hate or crime in these areas, just price; although if you chose to be in town Atlanta, I would careful not to end up in a unsafe area, so do your homework on that.

Barnbie my wife has found employment in Dunwoody also. She said it's right in the area of the Perimeter Mall and Ashford-Dunwoody Rd. I think I'm also going to look for something in the Northern regions. Maybe I can find a nice gig in Marietta. Long term I think I might want to first look to buy in the Marietta, Smyrna or Powder Springs areas or going to the Northeast perhaps a Duluth. I've been doing some research on those areas but of course will be able to do much more once I'm moved down in early March.

I did the drive when I lived in the Duluth/Lawrenceville area 6 years ago (the place was starting to go downhill then, I wouldn't live there, around the mall, now). Basically - from the Gwinett Mall to the offices around Perimeter Mall. It took me 45 minutes on a good day, either doing the 285 to 85 north stretch or sneaking around the backroads to Peachtree Industrial to Pleasent Hell/Hill. On a bad day, with a choice of alternate routes, it would take me an hour and a half.
Mornings were a bit better, afternoons always bad. At that time traffic would start clearing up to speed limit speeds on 85 just north of Jimmy Carter. I'm sure it's much worse now.

Duluth West
I have concluded that the people who drive from 'Duluth' to Perimeter/Dunwoody are on the west side and go down Peachtree Industrial --that's all I know to call that road--I know it has other names. I guess you can take Spalding drive across Holcomb Bridge to ??? Ashford Dunwoody. As long as I have lived here--I somehow take wrong turns and rarely succeed. Sometimes I end up in Sandy Springs --very frustrating.
I just don't think you can really get from east side of Duluth--past Gwinnett Mall and have any hope of getting to Perimeter.
'There is no rush hour'--just packed all the time I85 and all surrounding surface streets.
I grew up here---remember when I85 was new and before that--Buford Hwy was the only rd that went North. Anytime we wanted to we just drove and drove and drove---everywhere. 30 minutes was a long drive. LOL.

bhs119, Duluth west is good term to put it. Avoid Pleasant Hill at all cost in the afternoon from west to east.
