I know this...but lately Smyrna has become a very desirable place to live. There are some really nc places to live in Smyrna, albeit with Vinings names(Vinings Estates, Vinings Springs, The Lakes at Vinings, the Gates at Vinings). Those that live there should be proud that city is turning into an affluent area and is one of the "places to be" in Metro Atlanta.

The whole point of the Vinings-Smyrna convo was that an earlier poster was ranting about "no part of Vinings is in Smyrna", like Smyrna is the plague or something. I was making fun of Smynings Person...and the fact that people who live near a community with a more afluent reputation sometimes include themselves in that area. It's no fun anymore when you have to explain it.

I say I live in Vinings because my complex has that name. I can literally stand outside and see 285 in front of me, I guess a very narrow geographical margin puts me in "Smyrna" vs. "Vinings". That's fine, but I wasn't aware. I tell people I live in Vinings, because when I moved to Atlanta, I truely thought that's where we lived, not because it's more "upscale" than Smyrna, or I'm ashamed to say that's where I live.

These days who can really say where parameters begin and end...
It is very difficult for me to think of Buford Hwy as 'Lenox'--which is part of Buckhead to me.

When Hwy 41 was the main truck route north--Smyrna was a 'Rough and Wild' place--according to some--cough---my relatives.

It isn't your fault, Jewel. There has been a deliberate and apparently successful campaign to create a perception of greater prestige -- and increase price points outside the perimeter.

Not every neighborhood needs a Buckhead or Vinings label to be deemed desirable. Smyrna is nice, affordable and convenient. I ride the Silver Comet Trail whenever I can and sometimes I think how nice it would be to live where there is easy access to it -- without driving and parking. That would be Smyrna.

If actress Julia Roberts isn't ashamed of her hometown Smyrna (and even returns for her high school class reunions), then why on earth do Georgia developers and real estate pros continue to foster a "stepchild syndrome" by rushing to rename or erase Smyrna's local identity? Ridiculous. Smyrna can stand on its own considerable merits. But the same thing is happening now with extending the Buckhead and Brookhaven names, for the same obvious reasons. At least they are keeping Buckhead inside the perimeter.

So far.

My SIL is currenting living in Atlanta (just north of Buckhead in Dunwoody) and is an interior designer. She previously lived and worked in Atlanta, but moved to Florida for four years. Now that she is back in Atlanta, the job market is next to impossible for designers. She has had a difficult time even finding a position and now they are not paying her what they agreed to. Certainly take this into account when deciding what you can do as far as a mortgage - the design business in Atlanta is very fickle.

By the way, Buckhead's specific public middle and high schools are Sutton Middle School and North Atlanta High School.
