You can buy tokens as you need them. I think the card has a time limit on it, but not sure what the time frame for you is or for using MARTA. When you buy tokens at the machine, it will explain all that. Enjoy Atlanta!

Um, the token system was taken out almost 2 years ago. It's now all "Breeze Card". For visitors, you have to buy a Temporary Breeze Card (which is $0.50) and add rides or cash to it. The Temporary Breeze Card is good for 90 days.

When are you arriving? Tons of people use marta for commuting or airport but I would stick to busy times. And check out my username.

Default Atl303...

thanks for the best regards. I wish i would be able to enjoy Atlanta but that will only be traveling on MARTA. Dad is ill and I'm coming to Woodstock to relieve mom of some of the burden. I wish i would be able to go to the city but probably not.

I have always enjoyed downtown and midtown Atlanta when i was there. I think the suburbs are really nice too. Atlanta 'burbs are like 'sanitized versions of NY suburbs

I'm scared of the plane ride as i have not flown since 1978 when i was 16. NW Airlines 255 in '87, Lockerbie Scotland in '88, TWA 800 in '96 and of course 9/11 all added to my flying phobia so it's going to be high anxiety to fly again. In the past I've driven to Atlanta from NY City but since dad has been ill i decided i am goling to have to learn how to brave flying again. Driving just eats up too much time. I can't wait to step off that plane with my bag and get into MARTA. What a relief that will be!!

It is a card system. You can buy in trips or days. If you arent going to be riding much, just buy in trips. For a visitor you don't need to worry about the expiration time.

LOL, believe me, you will be pissed if you start using MARTA while you're here. Everyone I know from NY finds MARTA to be unbelievable. The buses are much, much worse than using the trains though. Using the train at night, you could have up to a 20 minute wait. Buses, up to an hour depending on what bus it is. All the problems with MARTA are based upon the lack of efficiency, not safety. Like someone said before, there's always people with luggage around. I see it every time I go Northbound. Generally the people with luggage (cold look on their face, taking up multiple seats while people are standing, etc) are the rude ones, not the regular riders. So yeah, no one is going to bother you.

Whats funny also is how the airport riders are clutching their luggage with white knuckles as if someone is going to grab it and run (to where? through the doors to another car?). Then again, I have seen people leave their luggage by the doors and go sit in the middle of the car. Now that just isn't very bright.

Default It's hilarious because...

in all the 31 years i've ridden NY subways (since i was 15) i got lost only once and found my way back anyway

I've transferred trains in the worst neighborhoods(S bronx, bed Stuy in Brooklyn) close to midnight, ride them to go everywhere to this day and mom is afraid that there will be 'characters" in the MARTA trains who will see me with luggage and think I'm from out of town. I told her is it possible instead they might think I'm originally from Atlanta and just returning from going out of town?

I've browsed many MARTA stuff online and i'm looking forward to it. The only other rapid transit systems I've used was in CD and that was 28 years ago. I want to ride another city's transit line and see what it's like
