gay couple moving to atl
we are a 40 something gay male couple ready...oh so ready to leave Florida. We are thinking of Atlanta and would like a little insight into a few things. First of all, we like Cumming....have a couple of friends there. Any reason gay men shouldnt move to Cumming??? Also, we are both realtors. We have been pretty successful in Fl even in a bad market because we are willing to really work. I assume that will be the case in Ga as well?? Thank you in advance for your help

well, Cumming is not near Atlanta. It's very conservative so I would imagine that it's not very accepting of gay people.

I don't think that Cumming would be necessarily hostile, but you're not going to find a lot of gay people there. To me, Cumming is the very definition of affluent, white-bread suburbia. If that's what you want (as well as a looonnng commute to Atlanta), then by all means, go for it.

I think you all need to move up to Blue Ridge, GA along with my wife and myself - if and when we move from N. CAL!
(see this thread - http://www.city-data.com/forum/georg...ogressive.html ) referring to what I am talking about.
Boy - from what feedback I'm getting about these N. GA "locals" and their mentalities, I think we need to consider bringing in a whole crew of diverse people to bring them into reality. Cumming is right next to Alpharetta which seems like it would be pretty mainstream - or is it?
Maybe we should just move to Alabama instead! Maybe its more in the modern world than Georgia.

Welcome gentlemen … most of Metro Atlanta is and continues to be very diverse, therefore wherever YOU feel comfortable is perhaps the best place you ought to be.
There is nothing documented nor proven that living within the City of Atlanta guarantees you any sanctuary, friendships nor acceptance.
I transferred here in 1991 from Southern California with my two jobs – airline and IT Consulting. I lived in Midtown and wasn’t comfortable with the environment and decided to move to the NW ‘burbs.
I’ve owned my home in NE Cobb County since 1992 and am the longest residing homeowner on my street. We have all representations of life here … on my street alone … Caucasian, African-American … Hispanic, Asian … straight, gay … Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and I think Hindu. I’ve yet to see that ANYWHERE in Georgia. Our street is most definitely unique and special.
I’m 52 years old, don’t go to bars … and really my “own” person. I neither follow any crowd nor look for acceptance from any outside source.
I have known many gay couples who live up on Lake Lanier. There is the “Northern Triangle” organization that encompasses gay people between I-75 and I-85. There are social groups, monthly potlucks, help and guidance and a directory of services.
What is MOST important is that what YOU BOTH are comfortable with. I can honestly say that in the 16.5 years I’ve owned my home in [the infamous] Cobb County … I have never experience any hatred or prejudice. I have never experience or heard of any serious crime in my neighborhood (other than a bit of teenage pranks).
I cannot speak for other area(s) however I might emphasize that you both may be quite successful when the RE market turns around. Your unique approach and partnership just may be welcomed in an area in which diversity is less common … or “more” common for those seeking your guidance to move into the area? You certainly may have less competition, who knows?
Best of luck to you both …

OK where is the PARTY? I graduated HS from San Luis Obispo Senior High (do you folks know where that is?) ... USC and Pepperdine Graduate here. Spent every Summer in the City of San Francisco at Grandma's house (how lucky CAN you get!)
Everyone moving into Metro Atlanta brings with them a unique and diverse background that makes this community.
Whether or not were accepted, despised or told otherwise ... I'm going to remain ME, I'm not going to move, change or be quiet for anyone indigenous or not?
BTW Blue Ridge is lovely. Have several co-workers that live up there and also Ellijay. THEY DRIVE to ATL airport for work, but only go once per week (like me).
Not to worry - there are some great people here ... and like everyplace I've been (been around folks..) they just get a little harder to find!
Best 2 U ... move soon please.

Cumming isn't right next to Alpharetta, it's 12 miles away.
The way Atlanta is growing, we will see a time when Cumming is just like Alpharetta. That time is not now, however.

Forsyth County is probably the least diverse in Metro Atlanta. It's probably 99% white. I think you would find North Fulton much more accepting than Forsyth.

Yes, downtown Cumming is. But, remember, with how they do addresses in crazy Metro Atlanta/Georgia (with all of this unincorporated urban territory), the Cumming address goes very far south. Most of South Forsyth (except for areas immediately near the Fulton County line) have Cumming addresses. So, when one says Cumming, it really could just mean "North Alpharetta."

I think Cumming would be a great place for you. The RE market there should be fairly solid and it puts you close enough to get downtown and within good drive of some nice camping, scenery to the north.
I wouldn't worry about how you are perceived- i think you'll be fine.
