Traffic Cops in Mableton, GA
Has anyone had any trouble with the local police in Mableton (Cobb County) area? My 16 year old just got his long-awaited license yesterday afternoon. He was stopped by a police officer at 9:30pm. Around 11:00pm the office came to my home and told me a huge story of my son driving wrecklessly, cutting people off in traffic, and evading police. He named a specific intersection and told me that my son was driving 50-65 mph - with traffic! My son had been counting down the hours as to when he would get his license. My son is no angel, but he's not an idiot either. The office cussed at my son and called him a liar. I feel like my son was harrassed.
I don't know if we should get an attorney or tuff it out at Juvenile Court.
Any takers?

I don't know you or your son, but I like to think I have common sense and I have a 15 year old daughter.
Let me ask you, what do you think is the cop's motivation for lying or for coming to your house and telling you what he says happened? What does the cop have to gain or lose? Then ask yourself what your son has to gain or lose for lying about what the cop says happened?
Now...when you first got your license...didn't you do a thing or two you weren't supposed to do? Maybe you even look back now and acknowledge that what you did was silly or even stupid, but you were just a teenager? Answer that and then go back and answer my first two questions again.

Troll or not, I'd believe the cop LONG before a teen who just got their license. For the sake of argument, let's just assume this post is legit for a minute - even if it's not, I'm sure it applies in some way to a lot of parents who have teen drivers...
Not saying that all cops are angels (I know a couple of cops, myself), but c'mon. At least 8 out of 10 teen drivers drive like absolute crap. Heck, why would someone let their teen drive after dark when they just got their license, anyway?? Talking on cell phones, having multiple friends in cars, not paying attention - yep, that's the average teen driver.
My neighbor's kid turned 16 a few months ago. He too, was just waiting and waiting to get that license and swore he'd be the best driver on the road. Within 10 days of getting his license, he was caught being FAR away from where he was supposed to be, caught talking on his cell while driving - and after dark, too. Then he drove off the road while going around a turn too fast, and plowed into a rural fence, pretty much destroying his car. All within 10 days. He goes to McEachern High School and I can tell you that if police were to stay just outside their parking lot each day when school lets out, they could easily issue 100 tickets every single day to the teen drivers. Easily.
Yeah, sure, cops and teens don't mix. Yeah, some cops can have a chip on their shoulders. But no.. I'd never believe a kid who just got their license if they got a ticket that "they didn't do it".

Aren't new drivers on "probation" anyway? I thought that if a 16 yr old got a moving violation ticket they lost their license for another year. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my story, and I'm sticking to it with my kids. Three teenage boys, no tickets, knock wood.

The Cobb County police set up speed traps here and there at fixed points along the E/W Connector and Cumberland Parkway, but I've never had any trouble with them.
I would talk to an attorney. A lot hinges on what your son was actually doing while driving.
