Working in Alpharetta, living????
If you could live anywhere within 40 minutes of Alpharetta, which town would it be? Assume money is not an issue but you still needed a good school system.

If you are working in Alpharetta, and money isn't an issue, then why not just live in Alpharetta? Some of the best areas in the whole metro are there. Why would you want to drive 40 min if you don't have to?
Sigh. And people wonder why traffic is bad.

What if money is an issue? Which would be the best metro area to move to in Atlanta? Especially, when it comes to low crime?

I totally aree with merlin...Alpharetta has some of the best schools in the state, low crime, wonderful commercial districts and the Alpharetta area is so clean!! My favorite part personally is the new city of Milton(formerly Alpharetta). It has a rural feel and huge lots but is still your average suburb about 40 minutes north of Atlanta and within 10-15 minutes of Alpharetts's employment centers. It's VERY expensive to live there though. Most of the new homes start in the 900s to 1 million plus range but several communities are still priced in the 600s and 700s. But if money is no object, you'll enjoy the exclusivity the community offers. Oh, and you should see the new Milton High School...its GORGEOUS!!

In that case the questions would be:
1. How much can you spend on living?
2. Where is your job, and
3. How long a commute can you take?
Very generally, things get cheaper and usually safer the farther you get from Atlanta proper.
Still, there are plenty of acceptably safe areas intown. It really just depends on what you like and how much you can afford. And also where your job is.

Obviously money is an issue.....however in my past relocation experiences, I have found the best method for moving into a new area is to first find out which is the preferred town regardless of price. With these towns and surrounding areas come all of the other amenities such as good schools systems, low crime rates, established Main Street, etc...
I was briefly in Alpharetta last week on business and I agree it seemed great...clean, new construction...but also a lot of traffic.
How about the northern umbrella surrounding Alpharetta or even near the larger lakes by Cumming?

The area you are describing(cheaper than Alpharetta but still affluent, with great schools and a smal town feel) is Roswell. Homes there range from the mid 200s and go up from there. Traffic is apart of Atlanta culture. If you will be working in Alpharetta and living in Roswell your commute wont be that bad. Living in a good area, ou will have to get used to the traffic there on the weekends too, as people will be drawn to your community for things their community doesn't have. Crime is low in most parts of Roswell. Some will advise you against the part of Holcomb Bridge from GA-400 to Hwy. 141 but those areas are less than desirable due to the apartments there. If you will be buying a home, you will not have to worry about this. Martins Landing and Horseshoe Country Club is in this strecth and I doubt the homeowners have many complaints about crime.
If you decide to reside outside of North Fulton County, you will be sacrifcing in the good schools department. North Fulton has some of the best schools in the state. Forsyth and Cherokee County Schools dont compare. Also, Gwinnett is less expensive and has decent schools but once again, North Fulton still has better schools.
