Default What happened to the jobs in Atlanta??

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to read/comment on my post.

Just wondering, what happened to all the "jobs" and companies coming to Atlanta?

I have a masters degree, and haven't been able to find a decent job. Unfortunately, I don't have any "connections" so, am subject to the job boards, and job fairs.

The job fairs list jobs that barely pay a nickle unless you're looking for occupations in certain industries (i.e. information systems, engineering). My degree is in management with a concentration in information systems, so it's hard for me to compete with people in the IT/IS industry with experience. However, I have years of administrative experience and see myself qualified for administrative positons at a higher level than just a secretary, clerk, or receptionist.

Are these companies brining transplants from other cities to hold the executive, or well-paying positions that people like me desire? I see condos, communities, and all that being built left and right and am trying to see where all the "urbanites" who can afford this living are going to come from....

Are there any decent "head-hunters" or professional agencies that I can look at to get an opportunity to get a decent job?

Thanks,

The economy is tanking nationwide, making it very hard for many companies to fund new hires. Look at how many industries are cutting people these days.

It isn't an Atlanta issue, in my opinion. It's a US issue.

Look into jobs with the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site they are a large employer in the Atlanta area and with a Master's Degree and a large amount of FED Employees eligible and who are retiring you should be able to find employment. Alot of times FED jobs get overlooked but they offer competitive pay, great job benefits and a myriad of agenices you could possibly work for in Management type position in the field of your choice. Good Luck !

Oh God no, sorry....I appreciate your advice, but...

I currently work for the govt, and have already worked for several agencies (VA, DOD, INS, FAA) and I'm really trying to get away from the govt.

The culture in the govt consists of a majority of people who barely can do their job and/or don't care to do their job well. Advancement is slow and challenges are few.

Although the govt pays well (in some grades), has a lot of benefits, and job security, I'm so fed up with the culture that going to work is like a daily grind.

The govt says they want to attract new talent, bla bla, but the legacy people make it so difficult for young, ambitious, or educated people to "fit in".

About Lockheed Martin, as I posted in a reply regarding the govt, I've noticed that the contractors are in some sort of "push and pull" with the agencies they have contracts with (or are trying to keep or renew) because the legacy govt people don't want their "lax" jobs to be taken away or to be held to a higher standard.

So, a lot of contractors end up getting positions in which the govt people give them insignificant things to do to keep them occupied until their contract ends. And, they get limited access to systems and knowledge to do their jobs - which makes the contractors look "dispensable" in comparison with the govt personnel. Some people are lucky to get picked up by the govt for govt positions, some aren't.

And, some of the contractors seem to be hiring people with similar caliber as the govt agencies they support - which defeats the purpose of working with a contractor if you ask me.

I've worked for the fed before (Job Corps) and wouldn't mind getting back in, but so far have had no luck. I keep applying for these jobs at USAJOBS for things like rape counselor or family services (I'm a social worker), but am getting nowhere. These are all positions at Dobbins AFB. I've tried to apply directly, but their website makes no sense. I have to assume they have a heckuva lot of candidates.

I agree. Somebody in this town must be making a heckuva lot of money given the price of everything, but darned if I know where they're working because nobody's offering me anything like a living wage.

Well, I think the AFB announcements are continuous, so even if you qualified, you'd be put on a list until they need someone. Did you ever invest in one of those books about applying for Federal jobs?

The "key words" and how you describe your work experience in KSAs (knowledge, skills, and abilities) is what's gonna get the computer's attention amongst a sea of resumes; and, will also catch the eye of the HR people when you are mailing in a packet.

Then, there's practice, practice, practice. I had to type up my resume and KSAs and I've gotten more interviews over the years (guess I'm getting better with time).

I also consulted with a professional resume writer. It did cost me like $300, but was worth it. The books are a cheaper offer, but I paid like $35 for mine or something. I "lent" it to someone and never got it back

Yeah, I hear ya..I wonder if all these condos are part of the housing bubble that's gonna burst??

If you are into the I.S/I.T. sector as your post says, try Cox Communications. They are a $9 billion a year company and they are always hiring as people get promotions and move to other sister companies. I just recently started here (3 weeks ago, came up from Tampa FL) and I know of 2 managers who just got promotions.

If you are in the I.T. sector try Dice.com - Job Search for Technology Professionals also.

I am not sure what your specialty in IT is, but the Cox suggestion is pretty good. You could also find temp work. I got permanent IT work from temping. There are temping companies that specialize in IT only. Unfortunately, some of the names escape me at the moment, but they tend to post on Monster and Dice. I also subscribe to this Yahoo user group called Atlanta Seekers - they send a daily digest of jobs posted primarily in the Atlanta area. Most of the job postings are office related.

Though it is stressful, you could try helpdesk jobs. If you need to get more technical, a fair number of helpdesk jobs (which haven't yet been outsourced) can get you more technical with operating systems, application troubleshooting, system configuration, network fundamentals or some scripting. If you get your foot in the door at a helpdesk, often you can move into something else. This approach helped me in my own case.

Networking in any field is key to getting better jobs. I wish I understood this in my 20s! To better network, you could join LinkedIn.com - I work in IT and it has allowed me to keep in contact with former co-workers, so that when I am ready to make the leap to another company I have some contacts to work with.

I share your frustration with federal government work. I know that large numbers of IT workers in the federal government are contractors and some friends of mine make some good $$ there, but they definitely have their share of disappointments. Sometimes I wish I had tried to stay on, but the entire bureaucractic deal to me was a huge drag when working in the Federal Gov't.
