How Stupid Is That?! (Connector Work)
The city will be hosting up to 70,000 Clemson and Alabama fans over the weekend.....not to mention the huge festivites all day Saturday in Centennial Park......and the powers-that-be decide to resume the connector road construction?!
Just wow.

I think on the news they said they only stop it for "major travel holidays", which I assume they think are Thanksgiving, Xmas/New years, and Memorial Day. Although a good number of people DO go away for one last fling on Labor Day too.
With the weather we've been getting maybe they fell behind and are playing catch-up. One thing's for sure, that's 70,000 extra people we won't have to worry about wanting to move here after this weekend.

It really only effects a lane or two on each side. Most of the paving is done. They're about done tearing out 14th street bridge.
It's a long process and there have been many events before this one, with far more people. Must be a Bama or Clemson fan....
Tech will play rougly every other Saturday with 50K fans and the dome will host roughly the same every other Sunday.
I think they've done a good job controlling the traffic considering I go thru it every M-F, now many Sat and Sun.
If you're coming from Bama it doesn't effect you that much as your I-20 or I-85. If you're coming from Clemson, you might hit traffic at Clairmont Road, not much considering you're coming from 3 hours away.

I-85 S during the paving this summer was a NIGHTMARE. Bumper to bumper from the Buford Highway exit to the connector and through. I mean, PARKING LOT-type traffic. If you're coming I-85 S, get off at the exit for Route 12 (To Peachtree Rd) and then take Spring Street to downtown. You'll save yourself 45 minutes at least.

They need three days to tear out and rebuild part of the connector and any other time this year would impact even MORE people (Falcons, GT, conventions) and it certainly can't be done on a work day. The number of cars per day is MUCH less on a holiday weekend than a weekday even with the events downtown. The only other option was to delay the project for four months which isn't an option.
Secondly fans traveling to Atlanta still have easy acess to downtown via I-285 and I-20.
gt6974a this is not the same as the paving work. At the Brookwood merge 75 will go to one lane and 85 to two lanes.

Yeah, two hours without traffic. Most likely it will take about 3 hours though.

They said on the news earlier that anyone who gets in the area of the Connector this weekend can expect delays of " at least 2 hours".
So if for some reason someone enjoys mental pain and HAS to drive through that area, make sure you pack some food, water, and a pee bottle.
