Default Looking for Woodstock without the humidity

We moved from central CA to Woodstock GA and I'm not sure this is where I want to stay. We want a place that has cooler summers. By the temperature of GA its great, but this CA girl had no idea what humidity was all about til I got here! AHHH! Woodstock is great. I love the green, the kudzu, and the fireflies! The people here are nice and the schools seem to have it together. Just when I step out of the air conditioned car, I'm ready to get on the next train west.
I think we should go back to CA, but where do we find a place that has mild summers say low 80s without the humidity, and maybe and no more than a foot of snow in the winter? Plus, I need a diverse area, with good schools. Now is that even a possibility!? Am I asking for a lot or what!?

Have you visited NC?

They are in a slightly higher latitude, for the most part, and it might be less humid there.

I hate to say it, but if you want the mild winter and 80 degree summers with no/low humidity, the west coast is about your only choice. I'm surprised that you're having an issue with the humidity though- this year (and last) haven't really been bad at all.

We moved from the Delaware Valley to Kennesaw GA. This was the worst mistake we ever made. Many transplants are miserable here and I have not come across anyone who has moved here happy. It's miserably hot and humid, not all but some of the southerners do not like us, and consider us Yankee's. We moved in May of 2007 and currently put our house up for sale in April to move back north.

The traffic is a nightmare, the roads are dangerous especially I-85 and I-75. There are horrific accidents all the time on the roads. They drive here as if they were in the Indy 500. My advice would be NOT to move to Atlanta nor the suburbs.

My friend who lived in Buffalo NY lived in Charleston, South Carolina before her husband was transfered here. She said she loved it there and hated leaving it. Due to the Bermuda high it's nice all year long. So it's nice to know there is another warm place other then Florida and CA to live yearly if you want nice weather.

Sounds like you're making the right decision.

I'm one of the first people to point out Atlanta's out of control problems with traffic, crime, smog, etc... but in your case it sounds like you really do hate everything about it here, and probably need to pack it up.

Did you visit the city at all before deciding to relocate here? Atlanta is one of several cites where the hype is sometime loftier than the city is, and when making an important decision such as relocation, it's always best to take a week or two off and go visit that city first to make sure it's a good fit for you and your lifestyle.
----

To patharbison: Charlotte MIGHT be ok for you. Somewhat less humid and similar to Atlanta of 20 years ago in size (but also growing). More diverse seasons (you'll see snow!).

That is one section of Atlanta. I've lived here all my life and would be reluctant to have a daily commute that involved the area you describe.

Some transplants must be doing well in the area because it is certainly growing. As for 'Southerners' not liking Yankees--maybe so, maybe so--it has been quite a while since I heard anyone mention 'Yankee', but know that some people might.

I hate the humidity but am grateful that it isn't year round. Is anyone else being attacked by the little bugs? I hate the little bugs.

Hello and thank you for responding to my post. I am 15 minutes new here. I have been here for before, but as the saying goes "nice place to visit, but wouldn't want to live here" applies! Already taking a loss on our home and although that is upsetting it's not enough to make me wait until the housing crisis is over.

Upon landing here I have had the worst luck. Our home wasn't finished yet so we had to stay at some extended stay hotel where I encountered bug bites, lice, bedbugs, fleas etc. Long story short, I have been under the care of a Dr. for loss of hair, severe sores that will not heal on my scalp. Next approach is radical, chemo - Then on August 28, 2007 (tomorrow will be 1 year) I was walking and run down by a woman who wasn't paying attention while driving. Now the latest, I think I was bitten by a spider, I saw a red bodied spider today while making the bed one handed. Last week, for 3 days I had the worst migraines, Sunday I went to the ER where the DR thought I was having a stroke because my entire left arm and hand are paralyzed. I am wondering if I was bitten which provoked me into joining this site for help with answers.

I have to make this my last post because it's too hard to type one handed. So as you see, moving here has been a disaster

Jazz, you made a second separate post about your medical condition, and in that I answered it as well as made the recommendation for you to revisit the hospital, as no one can offer medical advice in here.

Personally, I don't think you can blame lice, bed bugs, or someone hitting you with a car on Atlanta. I was run over by a drunk driver in West Virginia as a kid. Every state has lice and bugs and spiders. The heat and humidity yes, we have that here, and it's not for everyone. So, good luck with your medical issues and hopefully the doctor(s) can pinpoint for you if it's an allergic reaction to bites, or as they told you before, a migraine issue. Once you get that resolved, it does sound like relocation is your best choice to make you happy, so again, good luck.

Hello there, I'm a native Californian ... born Long Beach, raised in San Luis Obispo then lived West Los Angeles until 1991. May I ask where in Central CA you are from? Perhaps Fresno, Stockton or Bakersfield? (I left A GREAT deal of places OUT).

I transferred here in 1991, bought a home just on the Cherokee/Cobb County border in 1992 and have been here since not far from U now.

There are some great things about living up here, however I will say something about the humid Summers.
I agree with Moderator that this and last Summer has been actually quite mild.

You get USED to it. I have and it can be really draining. Always drink lots of fluids, PowerAid is good. Some people do and some don't acclimate weather wise. Bring extra clothes if you must travel during the day (I wear uniform for work, I pack extra tshirts, undershorts, etc., etc.)

It's GOOD for your skin. I'm 52yo and I have two classmates(female) from HS, one moved to TN the other AZ. They don't look like twins anymore.

Some folks sweat more than others. Get a pack of "baby" wipes in the plastic cannister, get a small cooler w/ice and keep in car. When you need refreshing, grab one of those and give yourself a wipe down.

You've brought your diversity with you as many people do from all over the USA and abroad. Give it another year or so and perhaps you'll see.

There are things I LOVE about Georgia and things I absolutely DETEST and ABHOR. Pretty common analogy for just about everyone, well ... in extreme cases perhaps not!

I won't "fib" and say that CA is my home State and endearing to me - regardless of all it's faults (no pun here). I will be retiring in Palm Springs some day or sooner to SLO to take care of elderly parent(s). My best friend of 30 years lives in West Hollywood. I'll be there Saturday to see him and his Mom.

Best 2 U of course!
