My three part divide works well on most fronts except for the northwest corner of the state where you get the ridge and valley and plateau section. Dalton and Rome are like the piedmont in many ways culturally and really can't be classified as true mountain.

The Mountain, Piedmont and Coastal Plain term is a good guide to divide the state culturally as well. Historically, the economics of the regions have defined them, thus the cultural differences. Coastal Plain the strongest agricultual area, the Piedmont, while still an agricultural area had a lot of growth from cotton mills and other industry. The mountains have been the most rural, some growth by logging, but small farms defined by lack of large tracts of suitable land. The growth there has only been recent in the form of tourism and retirees (again, Dalton and northwest corner are kind of a hybrid).

My main point is that people in Atlanta, especially transplants from other areas that don't know Georgia as a whole, treat Atlanta as if it were in the geographic center of the state. While it might be the economic and cultural center of the state, it is very much in the northwestern quadrant (uhoh, have gone from three divisions to four). Only an hour drive (without traffic of course if that ever happens anymore) to the Alabama line and a little more to the Tennessee line.

Just had the thought that nobody speaks of an east - west distinction in the state. It's always a north - south thing. Shows the regional differences of the South as a whole rather than distinctions within Georgia itself, thus my reference in my earlier post to piedmont areas in GA more akin to piedmont areas of NC than to Coastal plain areas within the same state.
Yeah, you never hear Georgia divided into East/West, but you often hear it divided into North/South. The same thing goes for the Atlanta metro area. How often do you hear people divide the Atlanta metro into East and West ? It's ALWAYS divided into North/South. I'm not sure why, but it is.

I suspect it's demographics. Here's an example illustrating this:

I once read somewhere, "There's Atlanta, there's Savannah, and then there's the rest of Georgia." I couldn't agree more!

If you believe that, then you're missing a lot of really interesting experiences...this is a diverse and fascinating state...and I've been around and have seen some bases of comparison.

Yeah, it's kind of like the same people who say there's New York, LA, then there's "flyover country". Elitest mindset.

Yep...once you get south of Macon...you have GNATS....which virtually makes it damn near miserable to be outside during warm months. From spring....and spring can hit south GA as soon as the end of Feb....so probably March into early to mid Oct. And it is hot and humid. Surprisingly enough....once the sun sets they go away.

At least north of Macon you have some relief from those bothersome insects. Seems like the mosquitoes are prevalent in all parts and worse in wooded lake/ riverside areas.

adnama, this is soooo beautiful

Unfortunately, I do rely a lot on info on the net, and... it is said that the South part if where there is lots of crime. I don't mind diversity but not in crimes, thank you.

Although we will be working in Norcross, we did not mind living further away from where work is; I understand that Atlanta is undergoing huge traffic problems where ever you look at it, and I have not found yet (although I love Acworth so far) the ideal place where you can go with no problems to Norcross (in the North) in (let's say) 30 min., and to the airport (let's say 30 min.) and live among the trees in a quaint/country side village/city like, and with "no" crimes.

I will be looking at the Thomasville's properties too. I like the idea of the area being warmer (I love heat, especially if I have a pool), less the idea of having some Gnats eating me though... something they have in Florida that I never see here in Atlanta georgia, are the nets surrounding the swimmingpool to exactly protect yourself from those nasty insects...

just thinking loudly.

You may want to rethink Thomasville if you're working in Norcross- the commute would be around 4-5 hours, as Thomasville is almost 300 miles from Norcross........

8 hours driving there and back and 8 hours at work, that still leaves 8 hours for sleeping
