Decatur schools are a separate system from Dekalb. The schools are smaller with smaller class sizes than the other systems in the area, and they are highly regarded. I know that it's very difficult to get a job teaching in Decatur.

The area is generally very nice and has received awards recently, though I can't tell you which ones. There are beautiful neighborhoods and the downtown area is quaint with lots of great restaurants and shops. Just like anywhere else there are specific areas you would want to avoid, but they are not widespread...I've lived there and visited friends for years and have never seen a bad area of Decatur. I'm sure someone will tell you about them...
Being only 5-10 miles from Atlanta you will have lots of job options. Landscaping is a big business around Decatur, and there is a hospital there also...Dekalb Medical Center I think?
