Hi everyone,

I'm planning on realizing my dream and opening a specialty boutique in Atlanta. I just don't know where to begin; my father lives in ATL, but needless to say, he doesn't know "hip."

Where should I open up shop?

I'm interested in mid- to affluent areas, something along the lines of "little five points."

Any suggestions will help! Thank you!

If I were you I would look at either the Vinings, Mid-Town, Virginia Highlands or Alpharetta areas. Those are 4 areas where there is TONS of money and specialty shops seem to do pretty well. I am sure there will be plenty of competition and rent/leased space will cost you a fortune, but if you have the right products and are wanted by many you should do pretty well.

There was a similiar post a couple of weeks ago. Several posters suggested The Forum at Parkway (West Norcross) and The Avenue Webb Gin (those are open and walkable mall). Google them on the web.

You already know that you need to situate yourself near a major trade area in a decent neighborhood. Having said that, I don't think the location really matters. You setup a shop like Henri Bendel in NYC, people WILL find your store and you will not lack traffic. Look how people go gah gah over Blue Genes in Buckhead. That store would pass as below average in Soho. I see Barney's Co-op and Intermix in Phipps as lost opportunities. Those shops should have been nice enough to prevent people from flying out to NYC to buy clothes.

City Walk At Sandy Springs. It's a new live/walk/shop/dine project next to Bluestone Lofts.

An older and more affordable option in that area would be Parkside Shopping Center that regained popularity when a Whole Foods Market moved in. There are also some little shops by a new Trader Joes -- in that Plaza thing that was refurfurbished recently on the east side of Roswell Rd.

Another possibility along the lines of Little Five Points would be Decatur. It tends to be a little more granola, but there is plenty of money there also.
