I believe that usually a certain % of the new housing has to be used for the pre-existing families, but that the screening process and behavior standards are set really high. I have a friend who lives in West Highlands over on Perry, which used to be public housing, and that is how it is structured there. One strike and you're out. Basically they get reduced rent. The others are basically given vouchers by the city to use in any apartment complex they choose. Not sure how long these last or how much.

Cool Native Mabletonians Respond

Have you moved yet? I see your thread is rather old.

Mableton is a diverse place. To the east, the natives are being overwhelmed with the new pseudo-Vinings development of very expensive homes. John Wieland has also done much to upscale this area with his older works on Nickajack and his current ambitious projects on Veterans Memorial (Bankhead to natives or Turner's Ferry to the historical purists). Cooper Lake is ground-zero for the McMansions, big homes.

Of late the west side of Mableton has become very Hispanic. You'll find lots of Spanish on the business signs there. It can be rather fun. The housing is modest on this side of Mableton and you'll find more original owners.

Southside Mableton borders Six Flags and the apartments there can overwhelm you with its lower socio-economic strata. Most of the black population lives in the southside. Pebblebrook H. S. is located there.

Northside Mableton has a good mix of older and newer homes of varying sizes. It also has a more affluent socio-economic mix with access to a huge variety of shopping and eating along the East-West connector. South Cobb H.S. covers this area. Our ex-governor Roy Barnes lives here and is a native.

Lots of history here. A one-lane covered bridge built by my wife's family is used daily by commuters. Chief Nickajack had his tribal camp at Nicajack and Cooper Lake. The Yankees (Union) tried to cross the Chattahoochee at Turner's Ferry. Where the Publix is on Veterans you can still find earthworks.
Roy Barnes also made sure that during his tenure we got some pork. He was responsible for the building of the Mable House amphitheatre which is located on the grounds of an ante-bellum home. we have two concert series come through this venue with lots of familiar music acts.

Schools. Georgia is not known for its schools. But from what I've seen traveling extensively around this nation, it's really a problem with parents and lazy, MTV-influenced kids everywhere. Send your children to private schools with the money you will save by living so close to Atlanta in Cobb Co., southeast! (B-T-W, please excuse my spelling errors. I was educated as an engineer.)

If you do move, or have already moved, just be respectful of the natives here. I'm sick of outlanders moving in, telling us how much better their old state or city was. I always tell them that they are welcome to return. They never do. Seems that us dumb ol' Georgians actually live in one of the best places in the world.

WSB (welcome south brother)

Hey, does anyone recall about 17-18 years ago when mail delivery was interrupted and our then mayor (wasn't it Maynard Jackson?) tried valiantly to prove that Bankhead Courts was safe for families -- by spending the night in a tent there? As I recall, he and his entourage heard gunfire and didn't last much past midnight.
.
Actually the full story about that is here:
A Long Weekend - TIME

he stayed there at some widow's house.

I drove past there yesterday, it just reminds me of some little town that is run down. Crime probably but there is crime of some sort in every city. I come from Michigan, while people have a stereotype about Detroit, it is not as bad as it is. Even I Joke about whenever I hear about some sort of crime, I say "oh must have been someone from Detroit". (i.e. murders,etc.). Now I drove during the day. At night I would be probably scared out of my mind. But I am a girl. I can say that about anywhere.

Heck I lived in London and at night certain parts you don't walk alone.. but being a person who has confidence, I did and I was fine. Would I let my kid now? nope. (she is 2 months now, I am saying in the far future).

I think that's a poor idea because they should be encouraging them to own homes, not rent.
