Can anyone give me any information about White Oaks Drive, and the surrounding neighborhood?

Also, what can you tell me about Avondale Elementary, Middle, and High Schools?

The White Oak Hills area is considered to be "up and common." Over the past couple of years there has been an extensive amount of new construction by some good builders. As of recently, construction has slowed due to the current economic woes. . .but this has not deterred interest in the area.

As for the make-up, you can find pretty much everything--from physicians, to interracial couples, to gay and lesbian couples, to the scum of the earth. But for the most part, White Oak Drive, and the 2 streets north (Alston and Dusty, also Delano) are very nice. I know a few people who live in White Oak--most with children--and they really like the area due to its close proximity to Decatur city (without the taxes).

Regarding Avondale schools, the verdict is still out on them. I have been inquiring about the Elementary school, which is currently in the process of establishing a charter school. AVONDALE ESTATES CHARTER SCHOOL INITIATIVE (http://www.aeainfo.org/index.html - broken link)

I think most kids in the White Oak hills area are zoned for Midway elementary. This school has made great improvements in the past year. At the beginning of the year, Greatschools rated them as a 1 and now they are a 6!! One point lower than Decatur City elementary schools and North Decatur area schools. So there seems to be great potental there.

Hope this help. Wish I could offer more assistance on the schools but I am still in the learning process.

Just to clarify -- the charter school initiative has NOTHING to do with the existing public school except to give families a different choice -- most families in Avondale and the general area don't feel as if Avondale Elem is a viable choice at the moment. Many do think more highly of Midway...

That is correct - the charter school initiative, now The Museum School of Avondale Estates, is a new public school of choice, currently in the application process with a targeted opening date of August, 2010. You can read all about it and The Museum School of Avondale Estates
