Everything that happens in Charlotte is huge, but things are happening in Atlanta all the time - they are just everyday things to a big city. Charlotte will not pass Atlanta in anything...when Charlotte reaches Atlanta's current status (maybe 30 years) then Atlanta will be in another league and still far ahead of Charlotte.

Please don't compare your 9 mile LIGHT rail system with Marta. It's a comparison of 20,000 riders per day (which I'm not sure is an official number) with 276,000 riders per day. Again, not in the same league. The 36,000 residents of Downtown Atlanta - 3 years ago it was 20,000...don't think things aren't happening here - they are.
So, since Charlotte may be in the same league in 30 years that Atlanta is currently in, does that mean in 30 years Atlanta will be in the same league as New York City ?

Chicagoland is a term that WGN made popular and that was to make the people in NW Indiana and Southern Wisconsin feel apart of the city. People in Harvey, IL don’t say they are from Chicago, they say they are from Harvey, same with places like Aurora out west, Kenosha up north, and even out east over the state line in Lake, County, Indiana. Ask someone from Gary, IN or even East Chicago, IN where they are from and they won’t say Chicago but Gary or East Chicago respectively. Just in Atlanta do you have people who live 75 miles from the city but yet say they are from Atlanta, and I think its because people feel self-conscious that if they say their from Villa Rica then someone not from the region will label them country. Thats just my 2 cents on the matter, others might and probably will disagree
I've met plenty of people (and grew up with many of them here in Atlanta) from Naperville, Aurora, Peotone, Elgin, Munster, Winnetka, etc., who say they are from Chicago.

The problem is that we should not look at cities today as just the city proper. Cities today really function as "city-states"...you could get into all kind of semantics...but really, the suburbs as they are around all of the cities exist in their present forms because they are actually a part of the city.

I think they the "hey, that ain't Atlanta" mess really just stems from territorial/turf pride.

Also, it is somewhat easier in Atlanta because we have so many unincorporated areas. (See other threads to learn about this phenomenon).

As much as people complain about MARTA, we need to remember that we have 48 miles of track, over 270,000 daily riders and a direct one seat ride from the worlds busiest airport to four of the five largest business centers in this entire region of the country. This city has no direct peer for hundreds of miles in any direction. That folks, is hard to compete with.
So true. However, it is scary to think what will happend if Atlanta does not do anything more.

No, I am saying that Charlotte and Atlanta will reach similiar leagues at the same time. Kinda like a Chicago/Detroit kinda thing. Atlanta will be "Chicago", Charlotte will be "Detroit".

NYC will remain in a league of its own...most cities will continue to grow and advance with their peers, and I don't see Charlotte ever outpacing Atlanta enough to be in Atlanta's league.

Have you ever heard of the Novare group? You should being that they are based in Atlanta. New comers to Charlotte are choosing the urban high rise life too!!! Check out the Charlotte projects Novare is building as well as other cities in the south.
Novare Group - Current Projects

The tallest condo tower in Charlotte is being built by a different group than Novare. This tower will stand 50 plus storeys tall.
The VUE Charlotte

Here is my personal video that shows the current construction of The Vue.

YouTube - Urban Charlotte

Atlanta does have more urban options than Charlotte. Nobody is debating that. Atlanta also has more suburban options too. My point is that Charlotte can show a newcomer a rail transit oriented community and a high rise condo too. Atlanta does not have the monopoly on this in dixie anymore thanks to Charlotte.

One more thing, here is a video of Charlotte's Nascar Hall of Fame site (I hate Nascar BTW) taken from the Stonewall Street light rail station. Enjoy!!!

YouTube - Panthers Sunday (the hall and Nascar tower is the first 7 seconds of the video)
So by your comparison.Charlotte might as well be like New York.

I was SOOO routing for Charlotte to get the HickCar Hall of Fame...what an embarassment that would have been in Downtown Atlanta! Congratulations on "winning" that contest.
