MARTA Question
Curious, why does the rider have to tap the Breeze Ticket/card on the screen to exit the system? Is this to monitor fare beaters who may have gotten on illegally ?
Also, (I'm from NY) I noticed that the turnstile areas had several agents assisting riders who didn't know where to tap the breeze tickets/cards. Did this indicate that many riders are out of town and unfamilar with the system?

I think there are 2 reasons. First marta may switch to a distance-based fare system where you pay based on how many stops you travelled. So they have the system in place now to make that possible.
Secondly I think they want to track the metrics of where people are travelling and they need the exit station to do that effectively.

Not sure, but I think that tapping it upon exiting the rail station activates your bus transfer...otherwise, you would be using a new fare upon entering the bus.
To answer your second ?...probably.

Oh jeez,
do you think it will cost much more to go from Airport to N Springs?
Feel free to read my second post on MARTA

No. Distance based fares are a possibility in the future.
Its the same fare to North Springs and if you choose to take the 185, tapping your Breeze card when exiting the station will allow to transfer to the bus on that same one-way fare.

Thanks...
I'm from NY City but my folks moved to the area in 2006 (prior they lived in Aiken SC and prior in Bluffton SC) after they left NY in 1997. You've all been a great source of assistance. As you can tell judging by where my folks have lived, they love the south.

Zone fares are extremely controversial here, though if MARTA is ever really going to make money on a consistent basis, they WILL need to switch to a zone fare system one day.
The controversy lies in the fact that originally, MARTA's main reason for being was so those who couldn't afford cars would have a way to get around. Today, those people are far outnumbered by an overabundance of cars on the roads, so, MARTA's main goal today should be to take cars off the streets. Low income riders could still be given reduced fare cards - but daily downtown commuters could pay via a zone fare system.
An example would be that if you were just going from the Arts Center to Peachtree Center, it might just cost you $1 to go one way. If you were going from Doraville to Peachtree Center, it might cost $3 one way, etc. Again, this is controversial and unless some people with brains ever get into positions of power at MARTA, I doubt anytime soon they'll switch to it.
Here's the BART system's fare page to give an example of fares there (San Fran) and how it MIGHT work here: BART - Fare Calculator. If you play around with it, you can see that folks can pay up to $7.65 one way for a fare (and they still ride it) - so even if MARTA did zone faring up to $3.50 one way in some areas, it would still be a bargain.

I'm from NY too and I think this is really strange as well. It feels very big brotherish to me.

BB- I thought it was to catch farebeaters who got in to the system without paying and a way of catching them when leaving!! You live in Atl now? Where in NY are you from?

I've always thought it was for farebeaters. There are places that people can just hop down into the station, like at some College Park stations.
