Fulton County
As someone who hasn't moved to Atlanta yet and looking at various options in housing, I noticed the property taxes in Fulton County seem higher than other counties. Is this true? Can anyone tell me about living in Fulton County? Bad or Good? Specifically in the 30331 (Barrington Trace, Winns Way At King Lake) and 30349 (College Park) zip code areas?

30331 is a pretty good zip code. It's mainly black upper and middle class and it's growing like crazy. 30349 is more checkered, the west side of the zipcode is nicer and newer. As far as taxes go, I'm not sure

Yes property taxes are higher in Fulton County.
Aren't you working in Dobbins? College Park is very far from there.

Depending on your fianancial status and the area you are working in, as lastminutemom stated College Park (South Fulton) is far from Dobins if you are working there, however it may be a little more reasonable than (North Fulton). You must also be sure to visit the area(in College Park) because as with any other city, some areas are not as good as others. I have lived in College Park for at least 14 years and I really like it, of course I live in the area where there are pretty nice and reasonable homes, again the way gas prices rises and traffic you may want to stay close to where ever you are working.

Thanks to all who have replied, thus far. No, I'm not at Dobbins yet - just interviewing for positions there. Haven't moved to ATL yet, but exploring all options (housing locations) so I will know what I'm up against before moving. Thanks again.

I live in Fulton County and I was born and raised in Fulton County. Fulton County's taxes are higher because it is the largest county and its county seed is our state capital, Atlanta. Because of this, citizens in Fulton County pay both city and county property taxes. Basically, our taxes go towards the major functions and buildings that control most of the state since Atlanta is the capital.
The area codes you are speaking of are considered unincorporated parts of Atlanta; meaning that they are parts of Atlanta, but are unincorporated, meaning that they deal strictly with the county (as far as fire services, police, and other things). Unlike other places that have decided to incorporate and start their own cities so they can have control of their services instead of relying on the county, this pocket of unincorporated Atlanta has yet to do so. If they became a city, I can't imagine what name they would give themselves . Anyhow, this is the only portion of Fulton County that do not pay property taxes to both the city and county. 30349 College Park/Atlanta and 30331 Atlanta are very close together in location. 30331 is the more upscale part of Atlanta.
If you happen to get a job Dobbins, your commute would be about 30-35 minutes (because you would be close to I-285 on the Southwest side and Dobbins in Northwest) without traffic. Now, this is Atlanta, so your typical commute would probably be about 40- 45 minutes with traffic. The choice is yours, but, if you can find something in Cobb County closer to Dobbins, I would look there.

Fulton County is 72 miles long and includes everytype of neighborhood from mansion to slums. It has rural areas as well as downtown Atlanta. Very diverse and lots of traffic.

If you are new to Atlanta, I would advise renting first and then figuring out the feel of Atlanta and buy later.
South Fulton is quite different from downtown area and North Fulton. College Park is definitely hit or miss. The old downtown area is quaint, but then in some unincorporated areas, it can be rough in spots.

Fulton County taxes are much higher, and you will get hit with City of Atlanta property taxes as well. I love Atlanta and have lived here 17 years, but I would avoid Fulton County if possible, not only because of taxes, but because it has an incredibly corrupt and ineffective govenerment. There are City of Atlanta addresses in Dekalb, with much better taxes once you cross the county line. Consider that as an option.
