Atlanta losing African-Americans... time to act?
I am about to move to Atlanta. While I was at work today I was googling atlanta and saw this website:
Governing: Atlanta/July 2008
I read through the first section. Please tell me that people of Atlanta is doing something to combat this loss of diversity.
i want to move to a city that values progress, and that wants to preserve its MLK history.
this website has almost made me reconsider moving to atl. i am in the process of writing the mayor of the city to express my concern (i unerstand that she is african american - correct?). atlanta needs to stay the symbol of black power. I dont want my 4 beautiful children to grow up in a backwards and un-diverse city!

There is a difference between preserving its history and allowing an area to fall into decay. I don't see what problem you have with whites moving in and revitalizing an area. Nobody is asking anybody else to move out, and in many of these neighborhoods, race relations are fine. Blacks are moving to the suburbs for the same reason many white families do, because the schools are better.

Atlanta is 61% black. If that's not black enough for you and want to live in a city that is literally 100% black than maybe you should move to Darfur.

Oh lord.....where shall I begin.
First I would like to say, each post like this helps me understand the frustrations expressed by many of the non-black members of this board. As an African American , who is not originally from Atlanta, it has taken me a while to understand certain aspects of the local culture.
Second, an influx of Whites into a city that has been traditionally African American is "promoting diversity", so the original posters comment is a curious one.
Third, the influx of non-black into the city is itself progressive. Please explain how this threatens the MLK history of the city. As I recall MLK wanted equality for all and for us to come together as humans being, regardless of race.
Fourth-If the influx of people, of different race, discourages you, then please don't move here.

Thanks Mattie for posting a sensible reply. I'm sure this thread is destined to go awry, but at least the first response was in the right direction.
In the City of Atlanta anyone can buy a home anywhere if they can afford it.
I am really suspecting some of these "newer members" are "existing members'" alter egos created to cause controversy.
Viva La Atlanta!!!

This is an interesting topic. Assuming the OP is not a troll, I can understand where he is coming from, but I think he is way off base. And I'm pretty sure MLK would agree. I have a dream.

I ran into Patsie in another thread and she was demanding her reparations check so she could afford to move to Atlanta. In another she wanted to know where she could get a $600 apt for herself and 4 kids near Lenox.
I think the observations that this is an alter ego to stir up arguments is a good possibility, every other post seems to be along these lines.
Perhaps I am wrong. Hate to assume the worst in someone, but this one does have a certain smell.

Damn right it's an alter ego. I don't know any black folks that would post garbage like that unless they got a screw loose. And who the hell would complain about non-blacks moving into the city? Maybe I could understand if a long-time homeowner was complaining about upper-income moving into Intown neighborhoods and driving up property taxes, but seriously. I like the fact that I live within walking distance of MLK's final resting place and in that walk I can encounter white folks, Asians, Hispanics, etc.

Loss of diversity ? Atlanta is gaining diversity because of white people moving in.
