Default Good Eats, In and around Atlanta Thread!

Yesterday, I stopped at Table 1280 http://www.table1280.com/content/home.asp

Granted it is the address but still a weird name. Was I sitting at Table 1280, but since there were more maybe I was at 1281 or 1282

Anyway, though small and rather eclectic / artsy fartsy decor I have to say this is for sure a do over. Everything our group ordered was fresh. The food was fresh and the bread was fresh. The Chicken Salad was wonderful.

What restaurants do you want to share for the residents and visitors?

Two of my simple yet classic East Cobb favorites:

Cazadores (Mexican Restaurant...two locations-one at Sprayberry {the better one!}, the other at Shallowford Falls)

Buddha's Delight (Chinese Restaurant...at Sprayberry)

*These restaurants are lovely (they have been popular in East Cobb for years!)...but I apologize ahead of time if this thread is meant for places that are a bit more "posh."

Capsule review of some of my favorite (and not so favorite) places to eat:

The Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead: of all the restaurants in Atlanta this is the best one I have ever been to. Insanely expensive, and worth every penny. Definitely a "special occasion" place. Beyond excellent.

Sia's in Johns Creek: one of our favorites although we haven't been as much recently and don't know if they have maintained their impeccable reputation. Excellent.

Fuego (midtown): Excellent tapas.

Tamarind (midtown): Best thai in Atlanta, although I haven't tried them since they moved to their Peachtree Street location. Excellent.

Trois (midtown): Excellent.

Veni Vidi Vici (midtown): Excellent (italian).

New York Prime (Buckhead): Excellent steaks, mediocre sides.

Blue Pointe (Buckhead): Medicore, pretentious atmosphere with "TGI Fridays" quality.

Emeril's (Buckhead): very good, but doesn't live up to the hype.

Buckhead Diner (Buckhead): mixed. My wife loved it and I thought it was only mediocre. My blue plate special was way too salty.

Imperial Fez (Southern end of Buckhead): Moroccan food with belly dancers. Very good with a great atmosphere. Fixed price, but very pricey.

The Downwind Cafe (Peachtree-Dekalb Airport in Chamblee): very good bar & grill with a greek flair.

Garrisons (John's Creek): Very good (steaks, seafood grill)

Stoney River (John's Creek and Roswell): I used to love this place, but recently something has changed (either me or the restaurant). So they are downgraded to mediocre. But the rolls are still fantastic!

Thai Spice (Norcross): Excellent. We eat there frequently.

Ruth Chris Steakhouse (Marietta St, Atlanta): awful.

The Chocolate Bar (Decatur): mediocre.

Blue Grotto (John's Creek and Sandy Springs): excellent tapas in the 'burbs.

Potrillo (John's Creek): Excellent and authentic mexican. Family friendly and sometimes crowded.

Right Wing Tavern (Woodstock): Shamelessly republican themed bar & grill in the old train depot. Very good food, amusing atmosphere.

And if you made it this far I will share with you the best kept culinary secret in Atlanta: the chocolate dessert buffet (all you can eat) at the Four Seasons on 14th street. Only on Friday and Saturday nights during symphony season. Out of this world fantastic!

The Garrison's in Vinings is also very good.

I've been to the Stoney River at Cumberland Mall twice. The first time (at dinner time) the steak was fantastic, but the second time (for lunch) the service was very slow and the food was so-so.

Three places I'll contribute as places my wife and I really like:

(1) The Marietta Diner in Marietta (just south of the Big Chicken on Hwy 41/Cobb Parkway) is a wonderful place. Open 24x7, a very nice variety of food on the menu, and I think both their burgers and their Chicken Cordon Bleu are excellent.

(2) Fortunato's on the East/West Connector in southern Smyrna has some of the best pizza we've found in the Atlanta metro.

(3) The Olde Mill Steakhouse by the Cumberland Mall on Cobb Parkway has some of the best ribs I've ever tasted. I can eat them with just my fork -- they literally fall off the bone.

Best steak: Kevin Rathbun Steak by Chef Kevin Rathbun of Rathbun's & Krog Bar - Steakhouses in Atlanta

Anniversary/special occasion: Star Provisions

Thai: Little Bangkok on Cheshire Bridge Road

Chinese: China Cooks, Sandy Springs

Dim Sum: Royal China in Chamblee

Best place to take guests and splurge: http://www.twourbanlicks.com/index-home.htm or http://www.spicemarketatlanta.com/ (although I liked the food at Spice Market much more than at Two Urban Licks)

Restaurant where you would not expect one: Floataway Cafe http://www.starprovisions.com/ and http://www.onemidtownkitchen.com/index-home.htm

Korean: Han Il Kwan on Buford Highway in Doraville

Tex Mex: http://www.nuevolaredocantina.com/

Date night: http://www.shaunsrestaurant.com/

Oh I forgot to include this one:

Sun Dial Restaurant (top of the Westin Peachtree Plaza): mediocre. Go for the view and the novelty of a spinning restaurant, but don't expect great food.
