DeKalb County GA Property Taxes
With the declining housing market here in DeKalb County what can a home owner do about having their current appraised housing value decreased? Looking for suggestions....many thanks .....Joecs

Why don't you either go on your County website and file an appeal or call your local assessor? My house was over-appraised by 100k last year, I fought it and won

I've appealed my assesment the last two years and they decreased the amount. So far...knock on wood...I have not had to show up in person and plead my case. I mailed them a packet with an insane amount of comps and other evidence. You only have a limited amount of time from the date your assessment is issued to file an appeal. I think it's 40 days...it says on your tax assessment.

I recently refinanced my home in Dekalb and the appraisal was way more than what homes are selling for on my street. The appraisal was done from the street (nobody came in my house). It was way higher than my assessment. Do I have other options to lower my assessment other than showing an appraisal? I don't really lose sleep over this, but it can't hurt to know.

If your re-fi appraisal AND your assesment are higher than you want them to be, you're probably out of luck.

Thanks for the responses, very helpful. I just thought with the decrease in every ones property values that the county should reassess every ones property, makes sense to me, but hey that would be treading on the county income and you all know what that would mean for DeKalb County - smaller government! joecs

Dekalb County has not reassessed my home, however, I just tried to refinance and obtained an appraisal. The current value of my home is $50,000 less that what the county has as the value on which they are taxing me. Since they have not recently reassessed my home, can I still request an appeal on my home assessment?

In Dekalb, assessment appeals have to filed between Jan 1, and March 1. Since you already had an appraisal done, it would have been very convenient - you could just send it in along with your appeal form.
You can call them TODAY (already after March 1) to see if they will still accept an assessment appeal: (404) 371-0841
