Again...we're losing the point here as it relates to Jim Martin and Saxby Chambliss. The point isn't whether the fair tax is good or bad, or whether it should be enacted (because it will never be), the point is that the Democrats are deliberately and purposefully distorting Saxby's support for the fair tax to make it look as if he wants to add an additional 23% sales tax.

Most people are too lazy or lack the intellectual capacity to read and understand the facts about the fair tax, so they have no idea what the truth of the matter is in this case. Martin and his backers are hoping that people will hear all the sound bites... "GEORGE BUSH'S ECONOMIC PLAN" (whatever that may be) and "23% SALES TAX"... and vote on knee jerk reaction and out of ignorance and confusion.

BTW... I would love to know what "lies" are being told by Saxby (to keep it here in GA), not that 2 wrongs make a "Wright". Democrats hate it when facts are brought into the conversation that don't comport with the straw man they are setting up for voters, so these often are labeled as "lies" when in fact they are inconvenient truths.

I don't have any idea about the international tax treaties. You'd have to do some research on that one or ask someone more knowledgable than me about the issue. Americans living abroad; don't know about that one either.

But immigrants (either legal or illegal) would presumably pay the same sales tax rates as citizens. That is one of the selling points of the program. Illegal immigrants who currently do not "pay into" the system via income taxes would be "pulling their weight" along with everyone else.

Here's some links re: immigration.

Americans For Fair Taxation - The Fair Tax: Illegal Immigration and the FairTax

American Chronicle | The 'Fair Tax'

Notice that he (Linder-in the second link listed) discusses the fact that all "legal residents" of the US will receive the prebate. I guess that they do not require you to be a US Citizen as long as you are residing here legally.

Uhh he does. That is what the "fair" (using McCain style air quotes is fun!) is al about. It would only get rid of federal taxes so you would still get hit with your state sales tax plus the "fair" sales tax.

It is regressive BS and anyone who supports it should be called out. I applaud Martin for doing so.

The regressive nature of a sales tax has been more than adequately addressed in the Fair Tax plan. If you think it's 'regressive BS', do your homework.
And the Martin ads are crass distortions...I will not applaud him for that.

It would completely repeal the federal income tax, as well as provide for a "pre-bate" and floor for low income folks. The fair tax would REPLACE the current regressive and unfair tax income tax system, NOT be additional as the Martin ads imply.

Once again, it's NOT about supporting the fair tax or whether you agree with it, it's about the DISHONESTY of Martin's and the Democrats' ads.

For the umpteenth time....GEEZ.

The fair tax is effectively dead...who cares? It's about the distortions and lies of the Dem campaign...NOT about the specifics of the fair tax. Just because you disagree with something doesn't give you license to lie about it to further your political ambitions.

Martin is an empty suit. I watched him on the debate (Fox 5 last week), and I've seen his appearances on news shows. The guy is a walking sound bite. All he does is repeat the focus group tested sayings... "BUSH's ECONOMIC PLAN" and "MIDDLE CLASS" and all the other tired mean nothing and do nothing sayings that have marked his campaign.

The man stands for nothing except being a cog in the Dem political wheel and he'll lie and appears not to be bothered by it.

Kudos for staying on point, neil. That is what this is about, and I agree with your opinion that Martin is nothing more than a party toady.
As was Cleland.
Having said that, I haven't yet forgiven Chambliss for attempting to shove that hideous immigration bill down our throats. Big misstep.

Sorry for getting off topic. It bugs me when Martin's misinformation is perpetuated, and I agree with you about that. I'll zip it now.

Well, since Saxby made it clear in the New York Times that he's only the senator for white Georgians, I'm not exactly bubbling over with love for him. I think it's funny that you call Martin and Cleland party toadies when I can't imagine what else Saxby could be when he's STILL playing the 'southern strategy' even after his own party denounced it.

As I said, I don't deny that Martin is misrepresenting his views. I simply don't care given that dude has such a foul record for the doing the same to others. What he did to Max Cleland was shameful. It simply was. I can't believe that the Republicans, the kings of dirty politics actually have the nerve to complain about it.
