Who Lives in Buckhead?
I am curious and in view of my late situation, also jealous... Who lives in Buckhead? Everytime I go there, to restaurants or shops I see people in the middle of the afternoon, sipping on coffee and having a great promenade. I am curious to know who are those people who can afford the houses and towers in that area? What do they do?

I live in Buckhead but I assure you that I do not have time to sit and sip on coffee (however, I do find the time to join and post here, hmmm). Thanks for visiting one of the richest zip codes in the nation, and remember that most of the people that you see wondering around there during the day have nothing better to do because they; hire smart people to run their business, have sold their business, or have parents that have done either of the previous statements. Must be nice not having to worry about anything...

My wife works in Buckhead and drinks coffee in the afternoon, and even shops there.
Lot of people (not rich) live and work in Buckhead, and drink coffee

People who work hard enough and smart enough to afford the prices buckhead real estate commands live there. What's difficult to grasp? By the way, these people are most definitely NOT celebrities, athletes, politicians...but people who bust their rump day in day out and make good decisions. They reward themselves with posh digs and convenience.
I love the wealth envy in this country, it's such an easy demagogue for me. How long until my GT license place carrying car gets keyed up??

Buckhead easily makes up 1/4 of the city of Atlanta. It is really Atlanta's uptown district made up of about 20+ distinct Atlanta neighborhoods. You don't have to be rich to live in Buckhead, because there are so many housing options available. I have a few friends that have homes in Buckhead. One owns a carpet store (Springlake/Northside), Another is an instructor at a local technical college (off Roswell Rd/Buckhead Village), and one owns a few low-mid grade hotels by the airport (Chastain Park). I have friends that stay in condos and apartments too. They are all regular people just like anyone else.
Also keep in mind that most of the people you see lounging, shopping, and eating in Buckhead don't live there. Same applies to other areas like Va-Hi. And often when people act high society and intown chic its a veneer. They hop into their Camry and go back to Gwinnett or Cobb at the end of their excursion into the city. Nothing wrong with that, because people try to blend into the perceived environment. With Buckhead they seem to turn it up a little too much sometimes. If you want to see who really lives in Buckhead (besides peeking through windows) go to the grocery stores.

When I went through some parts of Buckhead (East or West don't know) I hqave seen some magnificient palaces, mansions, they look like hotels... beautiful...but I would not see anyone seeping their iced coffee from my car, their "house" or castle being not so close to the road
However, I found that there were perhaps more money outside Buckhead (by the way is not it where the Gov. lives?) like Cumming for example where there are houses reaching 45 millions... Those I have seen in Buckhead were perhaps between 2 and 5...
The celebs or really wealthy are perhaps not in Buckhead (what a name, no?)

Yes, Buckhead is definitely a destination, and the people you see in the clubs and restaurants are likely from other areas.
Truth is, there is quite a bit more variety to Buckhead than often meets the eye. And you're right, 'Buckhead' really represents a plethora of neighborhoods that can be quite different in terms of land area, housing type and price. Walking on Brighton Rd. in Brookwood Hills is a much different experience than doing same on W. Conway in west Buckhead, or on 'Condo Row' on Lenox Rd. for that matter.
I do miss the Buckhead of old sometimes, when the CBD had a rather 'villagey' feel to it that I wish they made more of an effort to retain.

You're right, Valerie...while conventional wisdom says that Buckhead is Atlanta's quintessential old money neighborhood, the big money has fanned out into Vinings, Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, Duluth, Cumming and other points beyond.
Time was (early 20th century) the money suburb was Druid Hills; Buckhead was a semi-rural area comprised mainly of 'gentleman farms'. Buckhead started coming into vogue in the 20's when families like the Candlers of Coca-Cola fame abandoned their Druid Hills mansions for grander, more estate-sized properties in Buckhead.
