From NYC to Atlanta for a single 25 yr old
Hi everyone
I currently live in NYC and am looking for a change. I've lived in NY my entire life and would like a change of culture, change of people, and of course, hotter weather. Can anyone give me any information on Atlanta? Specifically:
How is it for single women?
Is the nightlife good? I love clubs, especially techno and house, but I also love live music and good lounges.
Are there a good amount of vegan or vegetarian restaurant options?
How is the public transportation?
Thank you so much to everyone who can help me out!

--Atlanta is expensive and it is best to find employment here prior to relocation. Atlanta is home to many corporations and is in general more family oriented than other major cities, according to many who post here.
--There are numerous choices in food/restaurants in Atlanta. The midtown/intown area has greater diversity than the suburban areas.
--You need a car to live in Atlanta. It is possible to live/work in an intown area and rely upon MARTA or walking/cycling but this takes research.

When I was single, I had an awesome time in Atlanta. Never a problem meeting men, although I heard a rumor the women out number the men quite significantly.
The nightlife is awesome in comparison to San Francisco, speaking purely on the club/lounge scene. I have been many, many times and to all different types of places and always had a good time. Since you're coming from NY, you might not be as wowed as I was my first few trips, but I don't think you will be bored either.
I don't know much about vegetarian options, but I've always eaten good food.
And seems like public transportation sucks. Like, you can't just leave a club and get a taxi home. Well, maybe you could if you lived in certain areas, but I'm not so sure. In terms of going out at night, unless you live in an area where you can walk to everything, it seems like a car is pretty mandatory.
I have 4 cousins who live there who are around your age and all moved from other states, who are having a total blast there! I can't wait to move next year and join them!

Nightlife is pretty good...you can find what you're looking for but it's not always outside your door like in NYC
Good selection of Veggie restaurants (my fave is Cafe Sunflower)
Public Transportation SUX (don't try to compare to subway, no way, no how)
Cost of Living is CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP compared to NYC. You'll feel like you died and went to apartment heaven.
Come down for a weekend and check it out! Great city for singles! Good luck!

There isn't a city in the U.S. that can compare to NYC's transit system...and there are only a handful of U.S. cities that have a more extensive system than Atlanta (D.C., Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, L.A.). So, Atlanta's transit system is decent...and better than most.

Is it hard to meet people in Atlanta? I'm very social and friendly but I would be moving by myself not knowing a soul.

Believe me, she will not find Atlanta expensive. My friends who visited me from NYC/San Fran/Boston were absolutely amazed how huge and cheap my first apartment was. And that was in the heart of Midtown.
There are some good vegetarian restaurants. The popular ones are Cafe Sunflower, Green Sprout, and Chat Patti.

I think apartments/housing can be expensive here --particularly Intown/Midtown. I assume the poster would want to live somewhere around Little 5 points?

I would like to live in the heart of the city close to everything... though not sure where that would be. Is it possible to get away without having a car there? I don't have one right now and would prefer not to buy one.

Intown/Midtown is the Heart of the City. Little 5 Points is 'funky' and the neighborhoods like Candler Park, Inman Park, Piedmont Park, Va Highland and others have some beautifully restored homes and to me the prices are rather high.
Midtown Atlanta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If you lived and worked in this area you might somehow manage without a car. The temperature is in the 40's this week and I wouldn't like to be a pedestrian for very long. Not to mention grocery shopping. Someone who lives in this area may be able to tell you how they accomplish mundane tasks without a car but I cannot. There are several grocery stores near the area but it wouldn't be easy to transport groceries on MARTA.
To visit other parts of the city --not to mention suburban areas--you would have to use MARTA buses as well as the train. Grueling at best and in inclement weather not worth the bother.
