Question Atlanta bound ~ what areas to stay out of???

I am a single 33yr mother that is relocating to Atlanta in Jan 09' . I've accepted a new gov't job in College Park and I'm looking in purchasing a condo/townhouse, but I'm not sure what areas I should look in.
I've read other threads where people have said some of the best places to live which include many areas. So, I want to know what places to AVOID completely in my search for a home. Since I'm single, I really need to live in a place that I feel safe in. I don't mind making the daily communte to work, but nothing over 45min.
All advice is welcome

The only place to avoid completely in your search right now (especially since you will be working in College Park)...

Clayton County.

Lithia Springs may be of interest to you. The commute to College Park is not far and can be made by freeway or side street. Nice area and okay schools.

As a single woman from out of town stay away from these areas-

College Park- Godby Rd, Riverdale Rd, Washington Rd outside of 285
East Point- Cleveland Ave, Washington Rd inside of 285
Clayton County- The whole county!!!
Westside of Atlanta- Bankhead, Simpson Rd, Campbellton Rd, Oakland City, Pittsburgh, Mechanicsville, parts of Adamsville, parts of the West End, and most of MLK except Mozley Park and dont ever go in Vine City!!!!!
Decatur- Candler Rd, Glenwood Ave, parts of Wesley Chapel, most of Memorial Dr
Downtown- Boulevard between North Ave and Auburn Ave

I wouldn't take the advice of strangers as fact. You need to do some of your own research before you really know the areas to avoid and the areas that fit your needs.

Likewise. It's up to you to decide. Some would say the Decatur areas mentioned above are suspect. Personally? I love the side streets off of there and technically you could miss out on great little neighborhoods at huge generalizations.

You will also notice that everyone's notion of undesirable is different given their personal wealth and income. The more areas you kick out, the more $$ you will need and you don't want to cross out a bunch of areas and find that in the remaining parts of town there is nothing fitting your budget. Then the next complaint will be "Atlanta sucks, it's too expensive.." be careful

What are your school expectations? What makes a good school to you? Are you looking for diversity?
