Envy...if you spend time on the US forum, the cities that get consistently picked on the most are Houston, Atlanta, Phoenix and Dallas (about in that order). All are rapidly growing economic juggernauts in the Sunbelt with terrific prospects for the future.
Contrary to popular belief, everybody doesn't love a winner.

I hope that made sense?
It totally makes sense...thanks for your response.

Yes, I see it as classic envy of a metro success story--and a continuing success. And the fact that it is Southern success makes it all the worse for people.

I even had a French-Canadian from Quebec City (while we were in Spain!) try to put Atlanta down...!

^Absolutely! They can get quite ruthless about it too.

I can't tell you how many times I have seen Atlanta described as "towers in a suburban office-park of a downtown" and "stripmall hell - no redeeming qualities," etc.

Thank you for the response, Mrs. Lovin. See my opinion in post above.

One thing I can say though, Atlanta did not really give off a great image to the world during the 1996 Olympics. The only thing I think Atlanta did really well during the Olympics was the Opening Ceremonies...it was one of the few times Atlanta has whole-heartedly celebrated its Southerness/Southern Culture, etc. And it was fantastically done...

And yes, I loved the pick-up trucks!

I once got into a HUGE fight with a woman from Houston on Cozumel. When she found out we were from Atlanta, she berated us for 3 days about how horrible for us that we had to live in such a "soulless" place. From Houston!

I hope you slapped the taste out of Frenchy's mouth and told him that Celine Dion couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

I loved the dancers behind those beautiful scrims during Opening Ceremonies.

Re: The Olympics......I think a lot of what turned people off was the crass commercialism and the flea-market look to downtown. I blame Mayor Campbell for all of that, but the foreign press had an absolure field day with every little thing.

Even though every Olympics since then has been blatantly commercial...did you see Coca-Cola Park in Bejing??? It was just as commercial and gaudy as Atlanta...

No, I missed that. Sure did love the Birds Nest though (I'm an architecture geek).
