From the Secretary of State website, it looks like Roswell voted handily for McCain. I wouldn't call it a liberal area.

Yes, Obama won in Douglas, Douglas is one of the more liberal parts of metro Atlanta and it has some nice rural areas. And for those of you who say that Obama won in Douglas because of all the black people, blacks make up only about 18-19% of the population in Douglas County.

Crux, he said liberal areas. Having lived in Peachtree City for 18 years, I can say from personal experience it is VERY conservative. The town voted 95% for McCain in the last election. It is probably one of the most conservative places in the state.

I know it's a contradiction in terms, since progressive folks are often drawn to more urban areas (Little Five Points, Virginia Highland, Decatur, etc, based on what I've read in this forum).

The thing is I want to live in the country (or in a neighborhood with a country feel), but still have neighbors I can relate to. I'm a youthful 37yo liberal writer from California and NYC. I like all people, but I have to admit that lefties are my kindred spirits.

This is what I mean by "progressive" and "rural":

Progressive = attracts creative people/families who are probably in favor of gay marriage, non-violent parenting, etc.

Rural = lots of trees and some space between homes.

Thanks so much for your help! We're visiting Atlanta Nov 29 - Dec 3, and will check out the areas you suggest.
The closest I can think of to what you're looking for is Serenbe( Serenbe Portal Page).
It attracts creative types and the entire development is designed around preserving greenspace.
I have no idea about the political leanings of the area and I quite frankly don't understand the need to live where everyone thinks the same way you do.

Where you or your husband would be working would be a major concern as it might be a grueling commute to some parts of the city.

Default Rural progressive area in Atlanta

I would suggest Pine Lake - it's east of town, just outside the Perimeter. It's not really rural, but it is a tight, progressive community with rural, small-town feel. It's an older community built around a small lake. Definitely a progressive haven - and lots of community activities.

I also have a friend who lives in Mountain Park in the North suburbs, which is pretty rural, but still close to the city. It is very small and more progressive than the rest of the area. The community also sits on a lake.

Hope that helps.

How about the NE Gwinnett areas?
We are very "progressive" out here.
We have good schools, families both straight and gay, we have mixed families etc.
Our children are involved in local activities, we even have an entire plaza called Kid's Village.

We are progressive. We believe to each is his/her strength to succeed. We believe in neighbor helping neighbor, We believe in independent thought, and for the most part the area is Republican.

We are also Non-Violent Parents who belive our children should not mimmick the ghetto rap scene or death metal. We believe that our children should be free to learn in a safe environment and to be independent to choose to be writers, soldiers, police officers, doctors, lawyers, truck drivers, etc. We belive they should have choice without government intervention. We believe you should be able to have a home with a couple acres and free to build your studio to write without the government increasing your taxes tenfold. And most of all you and your children should be safe, which is why most of the county police force along with many state and federal folks choose this area. Our associations are tight, and we believe in progressive movement of criminals to the local jail.

So come on out and you will be surprised how progressive the old red state folks are.
