I guess those of us from the midwest don't count, eh?

moved here from the UK 2 weeks ago. I have found the people dont know what to do with us because we are different. They are the opposite of being able to cope with anything international and the road systems are industrial, overly complicated and aggressive.

Think North America might have been better for me being a Brit.

Does anyone know if there are any other English people living here that i could hook up with for some sanity?

You can use the Search feature to find previous threads --'Brits in Atlanta' or something like that.

Atlanta is located on the continent of North America and I assume you think things would be better in the northern US?

In same ways they might be. The road systems where I came from were a little bit saner, and the Twin Cities is starting to implement roundabouts in a number of places now.

I too regret moving here. I am from New York and unfortunately the culture in some parts is so 1940ish. I miss stimulating conversations where the viewpoints of various races are key. Yes I love my home and how I live but at times I would take a 2x2 apartment in Manhattan just for some culture and good conversation

By and large, it seems like people from either coast actually prefer where they are from but move to places like Atlanta mainly for its cheaper living standards. If that's why you move somewhere, then you're probably not considering what its actually like.
Here are two threads that are related to your post:

If you are from the northeast ...

If you are from the west coast ...

Don't regret moving here but miss some elements of New England. I miss the multi-sports atmosphere that doesn't revolve around college football and the sense of community among Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics fans. I miss good, fresh seafood and being a quick drive from the beach or the mountains. I miss skiing and boarding and that first snow of the season, but I don't miss the pound-you-over-the-head winter that seems to last forever.

My family and I moved to GA (Suwanee) a few months ago (husband transfered) from Coral Springs, FL and I'm really not liking it here. We didn't know anyone here to guide us, as far as where to live, so I did research online. I read articles about how Suwanee was so diversified and community oriented and friendly. NOT!!! People here are not friendly at all. Noone smiles; everybody looks uptight. This was especially noticeable after the elections. Everyone here was mad! You would have thought that the gov't went communist. Ridiculous and ignorant is how I can label peoples' behavior. I'm not paranoid, but sometimes I wonder if they're not liking minorities (excluding Asians) moving here. One of my neighbors are Asians and they have not parted their lips to say "good morning". The shopping is terrible; you either have to go to Buford or to Duluth to go shopping. The only thing you can shop for here is food. The preschools are limited and expensive. The school my son goes to is very good and so is the area/subdivision I live in. If I could take my house and move it somewhere else I would. I don't anticipate being here more than five years; we have to wait until the housing market picks up, so we can sell and go somewhere more inviting. Don't know where that may be; have to start visiting some other cities and hopefully, we'll get lucky.

Guy I work with had the exact problem you're talking about. Black guy from London. He just describes it as 'different', he says conversation, jokes, etc are just different.

It took him a while to adjust and he wanted to go back, but now he says he's glad he stayed. He said it took him a year to get used to it.

good luck

To Hell With Georgia!

Yeah, the South and it's sports following is very different from the North. Not one is better than the other, unless you ask what the person prefers.

Here in the South we love college sports. If our pro teams suck we kind of dismiss them, in the North you're die hard pro but the same can be said for your college teams, i.e. Syracuse, Rutgers, Boston College, when they're winning it's great, when they're not you kind of dismiss them.

It's just different, that's what's cable/dish is for, right
