And that is so unfortunate. But hey, it doesn't hurt to imagine...

terrence81 Really and truly that's a hard question. Because so much would depend on the person. What works for some won't work for others. I don't have kids and like to go out to clubs and bars so living closer to the city would be more of a priority. However that's not to say I wouldn't live in the suburbs because if I got a job in Alpharetta I would be less inclined to get an apartment in Midtown. So being close to work is important to me but might not be a priority for others.

This sums of this thread quite well. It is all subjective. An older man of 75 living in the metro area has a much different lifestyle and preference of where to live versus a working mother of 32 with children of elementary school age. Best and Worst opinions on anything are really subjective.

Nah...not really. I get your vision of an amalgamated city like New York (5 counties became one city), but I think people move to places like Vinings because they are NOT in Fulton County and Atlanta but have many of the same benefits and proximity.
If people wanted to live in the City of Atlanta, there are plenty of opportunities to make that happen. I look at the cuts to the Police and Fire Depts being proposed and implemented in Atlanta, and then I look at Cobb and the CCPD/FD and I think most in Vinings are glad they're across the river.

Let's get back on topic and stop the fighting.
We can expound our likes and dislikes without getting down to insults. There is absolutely no need for name calling.. Thanks!

Even though in this day and age, with urban suburbs, metro interdependence, metro regions, etc., I think a term other than suburb would be better.
For the main city of the region...city proper. For the other incorporated entities (and yes, every part of the metro region (urban/suburban) should be incorporated)...metrotowns.
Ex. when talking about the Atlanta city limits in the Atlanta Metro Region, refer to it as "Atlanta City Proper." And then the "metrotowns" of Decatur, Kennesaw, Chamblee, Canton, Forest Park, Fairburn, Villa Rica, Lilburn, etc.
Yes, I'm crazy...but, I am being serious...!

Inman Park has been referred to for as long as I can remember as 'Atlanta's First Suburb'. Growing up in Druid Hills, it was definitely considered the 'burbs, as were Morningside and Buckhead.
Not sure when that all changed.

Is this forum moderated?
I came here expecting a discussion of Atlanta suburbs and got a political flame war.
I ask because the very first response had no real intent to be helpful and abused the thread and the forum by using the topic as an excuse to bash Peachtree City and Republicans for whatever reason, deserved or not.
The whole thread was polluted as a result, and the original poster (and I think the forum) was done a disservice. This kind of behavior if left unchecked will ultimately ruin the city-data forums, as they will be taken over by people looking for an audience for their unrelated "viewpoints" and/or undeserved attention (see, e.g., trolls).

Windu - It sounds like you have experienced the forumer dudewithaplan. He is a former resident of Peachtree City that enjoys trashing the place at every possibility. He has no love for the place - at all, and tries to paint it in the most unfavorable light to anyone that inquires about the place. Please take his posts with a HUGE grain of salt.

I think it all changed as areas became annexed by the City of Atlanta. Atlanta's city limits used to be very small. Right now, I don't know a link to show Atlanta's growth pattern (by annexations).
Many of the "neighborhoods" of Atlanta were originally suburbs/independent towns or cities (Kirkwood, Edgewood, Inman Park, Buckhead, West End {Whitehall}, Adamsville, etc.).

Hoschton!
Ok, So Hoschton, might not be the "BEST" Suburb, but it sure is a nice place to raise a family. It's far enough out there that you don't have to deal with those ITP-ers and it's close enough as I want to get to the largest mall in Georgia. Award winning schools and parks, and most people don't even know it's out here!
It's gets my vote.
Other good ones in Gwinnett
Dacula (west of 316)
Suwanee
Duluth
"Parts" of Lawrenceville
mod edit.
