If you're big into recreation with pedestrian/bike trails and proximity to waterfront parks as I am, then it's between Peachtree City and Suwanee. Marietta does also have a trail along the Chattahoochee. Atlanta's city and suburbs are generally TERRIBLE for pedestrian paths running across town.

I wouldn't describe the situation as 'terrible'.

The Silver Comet Trail is a really good one. And I like what Atlanta has done with the Freedom Park trails. I actually like the Freedom Park neighborhood, it's just way too expensive. The problem I have is no trails linking the suburbs to downtown, like lots of other cities have, like Denver, Dallas, Nashville, Austin, Tampa, St. Pete, Portland (OR), heck, Augusta, Chattanooga, Greenville (SC) too. But rcsteiner is right in that it's (connections to the Silver Comet) a good start.

The best? (in my personal opinion)
city of Decatur, unincorporated Decatur around Emory, some parts of Douglasville
The worst?
parts of unincorporated Decatur, Riverdale, Forest Park

It is ironic that Decatur zip codes can offer the best and the worst of the metro.

The big question if you're considering Flowery Branch would be employment- there's not a whole heck of a lot out there, and it's far enough from Atlanta that your commute would be painful if you had to get into town for work- 85 is a pretty congested road. If you were able to find work in/around Gwinnett County it might not be too bad, but I wouldn't want to go much further than that.
