Sure. But by making it a point of principle, you end up with these awkward situations where someone has to hurry to run and get in a door from 50 ft. out because someone has gestured that they'll hold it for you.

(I'm just having a lilttle fun here at the expense of Southern culture of course. But I really think I might be onto something here. I honestly suspect that the fact that people hold open doors here in the South with such emphasis is somehow rooted in the same lack of a taboo on drawing attention to oneself and being showy that you find in the Midwest for ex. and which can be seen in the greater proclivity here for conspicuous consumption in fashion and style. But, of course, I could be wrong. )

Yeah, I'll look at those streets and might be able to get back here with a little feedback. Straight off I can tell you that the Howell Mill and Collier addresses are just to the North of those parts I was describing that you pass though as you go towards downtown passing near the Ga Tech campus. Sorry to sound like a broken record, but there's no comparison to what those parts were like 10-15 yrs ago with what you see now. It's like a whole city inside a city has been built there, with the whole IKEA center nearby, Target, and of course the Atlanta station development. Some of this big box retail might not be a plus for you I realize, but for convenience there's no comparison. Years ago if you lived down here you'd have to either drive up to Lenox or to a suburb to get to some of the larger stores. No mas.

I'm looking at your Milton Terrace one right now and I can see that it's at the bottom edge of the Grant Pk area. (I can speak to Grant Pk because I was just living there up until just recently.) I'm not familiar w/this specific street, but it looks a little iffy to me. Grant Pk is probably the furthest South that you're going to want to go - for desirable apt rentals at least.

Considering your budget and unless you're interested in moving into an older house in a transitional neighborhood, I might suggest you strike these areas to the East of downtown and South of say Freedom Parkway, because generally these are all transitional neighborhoods with older homes and it's hit or miss. Grant Pk for example is very far along the transitional 'curve' (and had not fallen down quite as far in the first place) while say Kirkwood or Edgewood is much less far along that curve. (An exception to this might be a house rental, but I'm not sure how many of these there are in 1000-1500 range. You might look though.) The only real apartments in these neighborhoods are small brick 'block' style buildings that were thrown in 20-30 yrs ago as infill development (I'm thinking for ex. of Cherokee Ave by Grant Pk).

By the way, I forgot to mention that I would take full advantage of Google street view to start getting a feel for actual streets before you even leave Minneapolis.

Anyway, good luck with your search and your move.

Please let me know if there are absolute good or bad ones on there I need to be aware of.

Thanks!!
This would be my pick. Right on top of Piedmont Park, 1/2 mi from the heart of Va-Hi and a host of amenities.

Sadly, however, I know as much about areas inside the City of Atlanta proper as I do about areas in the City of Minneapolis (and St. Paul) proper: that is, next to nothing.

For me, the core cities are nice places to view on the horizon (Oooo! Tall! Shiny!) and perhaps visit from time to time for entertainment purposes, but not really places to live, work, shop, or eat on a regular basis. Not necessarily by choice, but there it is --I'm a suburbanite by circumstance and experience, not a city-dweller.

Whether that is conducive to your happiness or not depends on you. Since you are married and I'm single, you may enjoy Atlanta more than me because you probably can handle the isolationism.
I can't understand why such a nice girl doesn't have a man...it MUST be this God-forsaken city!

Who cares? To me she/he is just an angry, bitter human.
