Default Chamblee, Doraville, Norcross, Tucker, Dunwoody area
I have a friend who is looking at a work opportunity in the area listed in the title. can you recommend any good places to live there; most likely an apartment or rental home, something considered "affordable" for that area; family of 3.

What price range would be required?

Tucker would probably be a good place to start.

In the Executive Park/Toco Hill area of NE there are older homes/renovated which rent for $1200+/mo. The Sagamore Hills school district is well respected. North Druid Hills/Briarcliff/Clairmont/LaVista.

Doraville/Chamblee --parts of these areas have higher crime.

Housing would be more expensive in Dunwoody which would also offer better schools.
