Maybe the manager has something to do with certain decisions too, but ultimately it really does come down to the owner of a place like this making the call as to what type of glass to use, whether to use cages or not when they close, and whether to hire security at closing. I would not own a bar/restaurant in Grant Park without having several security measures in place like that, myself. The owner is now open to lawsuits by the victim's family, so I doubt you'll see that place open for much longer.

I totally agree with you. I don't understand why security measures were not taken after
The Lamplighter Cafe was robbed on Christmas
A Standard employee was robbed and shot at, by four man, in the restaurants parking lot. This happened a couple weeks ago.

I believe in this case that a murder that was committed during the commission of a felony is punishable by the death penalty. But that will be decided by the courts and the prosecuting attorneys. I do hope they catch the people that did this and give them what they deserve. A lethal injection.

Unfortunately with the economic downturn, we have seen an uptick in crime--not only in Atlanta, but nationwide. Don't be surprised to see more vicious muggings and robberies, in the city as well as in the burbs. However, none of this can cover up the fact that the four perps are complete lowlife scum who are unworthy of breathing the same air as all of us. The best thing we can do now is to stay strong and become more vigilant and intolerant of criminal activity. Also, watch out for your neighbor.

I am so sickened/saddened by this I'm not sure what to say. I was extremely pleased to see hundreds of neighborhood folks at the vigil this morning on the news though. That was heartwarming, at least.

Here is an idea. Demand that all Atlanta Police Cruisers have GPS in their cars and if already they do, demand that they put their movements on a public accessible friendly website so that their patrols can be closely monitored. Then if there are no patrols in your neighborhood, have the ability to contact the local APD precinct and demand that an Officer is assigned to your area.
When citizens are allowed more control over the asssets that their tax payer dollars provides, amazing things can happen!

I hope they do catch the guys and give them the death penalty. But there will be more more robberies and homicides just like that in the future. These guys came from a failed isolated culture that doesn't have a proper mechanism for assigning cost to life. Change the culture and less of these tragedies will happen.

Awful. Last night here in Roswell a man was assaulted when he got home from work, pistol whipped and him and his family tied up while they were robbed...

I’m sure I’m going to get crucified for this comment but I don’t care, quite frankly I feel it needs to be said. First I am sorry than this man lost his life, anytime someone loses their life at the hand of someone else is tragic. But with that said the disparity in the reaction to this incident and lack thereof to other incidents sickens me to my stomach, yes most of the time murders are committed between two people who are involved in an illegal activity or know each other, but not all the time. Where were all of you all two weeks ago when that sophomore at Morehouse College was carjacked and murdered on the Westside, he wasn’t a drug dealer, he was a dean’s list student who also was the salutatorian at his high school in Michigan where he was from. Where was all the uproar then?? He was just as innocent as this bartender in Grant Park, and just as productive a member of society. What about the countless numbers of teenagers that have been murdered this and last year in this city???? I guess mums the word when it comes to them, every night you see it on the news, another murder. But it takes one sole murder in a trendy part of town to get people up in arms about violence, as if people haven’t been getting shot everyday in Atlanta for as long as anyone can remember. Not to mention that yes Grant Park has seen a huge increase in property values but the Memorial Dr/ Boulevard area still isn’t anywhere near safe, especially at 4am. And if I’m not mistaken haven’t there been like two other murders within like 3 blocks of that bar in the last few months?????? What about that delivery driver who was working 2 other jobs who got murdered right down the street from there like last month while he was just dong his job, where were you all then??????

I don't usually watch the local news in the evening. I found out about this incident on my neighborhood google group, not the news. Since I do not live near Morehouse, that incident was not posted on my group. Trust me I am just as disgusted with that incident as well.

Those of us in the area are well aware of this fact. I am never outside at 3-4am regardless of my surrounding. That includes my upper middle class neighborhood in Washington dc as well.

Just as appalled. Just because its not posted about on City Data does NOT mean the neighborhood residents are not meeting and thinking of ways to take action. We pay for an off-duty officer out of our own pockets because the city has too few beat officers. You have no idea how hard we work in this community. How dare you judge and say we are not up and arms about crime.
