Okay this is GROSS. What does anyone know about roof rats? If so, what was the course of action to get rid of them completely? Does every situation where the insulation was affected require the entire insulation to be ripped out? What is the BEST way to get rid of this problem forever?
Thanks to all who have endured this and want to pass along their advice!

I have the same problem----first find where they are getting in and seal it up....then.. You have to kill them... Get snap traps, use peanut butter and wait---then you have to dispose of them and set another trap. If you are squeamish then you can pay an exterminator If you use poison---then they will die in your house and it will smell for a few days. The downside to poison is the smell and also if you have animals then you run the risk of them eating the poison or eating a dead rat... I have tried live traps, radio noise, repellent -- it is all a gimmick and does not work - snap traps or poison Good luck

The time to kill them is now b/c it's cold and they won't smell.

We've had them in our house, my mom has had them, etc.

All our exterminator (waste of money) did was what we did, he threw out a bunch of poison in the attic. There's a name for it but it's the green poison you can get from Home Depot, Kroger, etc.

It works, we never found the bodies but I'm sure they're in the insulation somewhere, our exterminator say these were 1 footers. We had shiot and **** all over our insulation, took a wet vac up there to clean it up.

Do a search under "squirrels in the attic". This is a pretty common problem it seems.

Yeah, I had squirrels in my atttic and called 6 different pest control places -- the work they do to get rid of squirrels also apply to roof rats. I had the construction gap on my roofline sealed up with metal flashing and the vents in my crawl space sealed with mesh. They also set up traps in the attic for me and came in every few days to check on it.

Anyhow, I finally went with one place that was reasonably priced and offered a lifetime guarantee (thanks, Mattie, for the recommendation!). The lifetime guarantee definitely gives me a peace of mind -- if squirrels or roof rats get into the house, they'll come out and fix the issue. Hopefully, that won't be needed.

Good luck...!

Hey Sweattea - you know that at night the roofrats can squeeze through your vent registers and crawl into your bed, right?

Sorry. Did I say that out loud?

Thanks so much, atlantagreg. Are you trying to get people to move away from Atlanta so you don't have to moderate as much on the posts

Honey, I'm heading to Cali if I leave here. I'm sure there's some scary things that'll get me but at least I'll have the ocean!

We just had these in my attic...the little critters came through some very small holes that had formed through our roofline --- (we're finding out 10 years later that our builder wasn't the best)....Swat Services came out and completely fixed the problem....they filled in the holes, set traps, and actually caught a couple of large rats that were living in our attic....yuck! Unfortunately it was $1,500 to do the job....but we figured it was cheaper than it would be if they continued to live up there and do damage.

The customer service from Swat was outstanding. Would highly recommed.
