I have a couple birthdays coming up and am looking for some unique places to shop. Not mall stores, and not anything that's completely unaffordable. I just want to find a strip of unique, locally owned stores with eclectic things to offer that aren't geared toward the wealthy. I just moved here and live north of decatur, so I have no idea what the city has to offer!

I've been thinking about virginia highlands and little five points, but is there anywhere else that would be fun to check out?

Thanks!

Lots of cute stores and boutiques in Virginia Highland and Decatur. They are pricey though. The one boutique where I seem to have luck (clothing is reasonably priced) is Fab'rik. There are several but the closest to you is on West Peachtree at around 13 Street. Only problem is it's not really a 'strollable' area but a great shop.

Definitely check out downtown Decatur -- there are tons of fun boutiques with reasonably priced goods. Mingei Arts, Taste, and Heliotrope are some of my favorites stores. I was able to find lots of cool gifts during the holidays without breaking the bank. I've heard that Greene's sells great nuts and candy, though I haven't been yet. Some stores offer discounts if you use a Decatur resusable bag.

Hop in your car and head up GA400 North for about an hour or so and go to the town of Dahlonega. The town square is nothing but artists galleries and shops and restaurants and stores, etc. You can find stuff there you can't find anywhere else. Since it's a "gold town" from the 1800s, you can find very inexpensive hand-crafted gold jewelry among many other types of things. It's not in Atlanta, but since you're new it will give you a place to shop exactly as you described plus help you see another area not far from here that's fun to visit.

I have always liked Traders...it's off of Flat Shoals. Google search Traders Atlanta and you'll find their site. They have tons of stuff for gifts and they sell furniture too. I think their prices are fair. Parking is crap but that's Atlanta!

i agree with fab'rik and traders, depending on what you're shopping for. heliotrope in downtown decatur also has a lot of cute things. taste in downtown decatur is also good for kitchen stuff.

i would totally recommend going to youngblood art gallery in poncey-highlands (on highland near cafe de sol, pura vida, urban outfitters). they have a shop in the front of the gallery with a LOT of super cool gifts, etc - most of which were made by local or independent artists. and the prices are great!

I definitely second AtlantaGreg's recommendation of Dahlonega. Great place and very cute town. Other good places would be Alpharetta's downtown square or if you really want a very unique experience, go to Helen, GA. It's a quaint Alpine village with lots of distinctive shops and restaurants. Enjoy!

One note about Helen, though...

Look at the bottom of the merchandise before buying if you want a unique locally-made item. While nearly everything in Dahlonega is made by local artists and craftspeople, you'll find a lot of stuff in Helen that LOOKS German-village made, but has "made in China" on the bottom. Oops. LOL

Thanks everyone! Dahlonega sounds like it would be fun...I went to a corn maze near there when I first moved here, and the drive up was nice. Also got to see mountains for about 15 sec when we drove over a hill.

Plaza Fiesta is definitely unique, locally owned and eclectic.

My favorite store in the Atlanta area is Phoenix and Dragon.

Art and Handcrafted Gifts Products - Phoenix & Dragon Bookstore (http://www.phoenixanddragon.com/catalog/product_cat.php/subid=628/index.html?PHPSESSID=76600d2ef7573f92c9c54628d47b8 90c - broken link)
